Would anyone be able to point me to literature in this area? I'm
particularly interested in how Arab and/or Moslem leaders view their own
rhetoric, especially public statements meant for the West, as well as
how Western leaders interpret these statements and the rhetoric of the
responses.

Thank you in advance!

The entire issue of _Cultural Critique_ N#19 (fall 1991) is devoted to "The
Economies of the (Gulf) War." I find it compelling. There is also a new book by
Akbar S. Ahmed called _Postmodernism and Islam_ (Routledge, 1992) that touches
on your topic. Finally, "Under the Sign of Orientalism: The West vs. Islam" in
_Cultural Critique_ (Winter 1992-93), pp. 165-197--is also extremely useful.

I would look under author name Edward Said. He does some work in this area.
