I'm doing a literature review on a topic sort of like this: How changes
in linguistics (Western) parallel changes in concepts of literacy in
literacy studies. Since literacy programs (from what I can tell) don't
necessarily make their assumptions about the nature of 'language'
explicit, I think such a map of the terrain & its changes might be
useful. The aim here is to show how (or whether) a paradigm shift in
linguistics (from a Chomsky approach to a JP Gee approach) is
parallelled (sp?) in literacy studies. I've read stuff by Scribner,
Gee, Roy Harris and a few other which would seem to demonstrate this,
but I want a much more comprehensive view of each of the two fields.
I'd also want constructive criticism of the idea itself, and any
suggestions of what might be more interesting to look at. I'm just a
grad student.
