Does anybody know of a hotline (or a notebook on this
hotline) that's devoted to literary history of the modern,
theory-oriented kind? My specific interest is the rhetoric of
historical representation; I'm now working on a sequel to my
book *Word by Word: The Language of Memory* (Cornell UP, 1990).

Jonathon,

I share your interest in the rhetoric of historical representation and am
currently working on a project that focuses on how narrative accounting of
biographical "facts" and "events" is used as a suasive tactic in arguing for
specific interpretations of canonical texts in classical rhetoric and how these
accounts contribute to scholars' current arguments about the meaning and value
of rhetoric and rhetorical history. From the reading I've done in contemporary
work in literary history, I suspect there are strong parallels. I hadn't
encountered "Word by Word" as yet but will look for it today. From the little
I've said, does it seem to you that it would be relevant?

I'm not familiar with any b-board or discussion group such as you asked about
but would appreciate your forwarding any leads you get from your request if
you wouldn't mind.

Thanks!
