John Bromley from the Union Pacific was kind enough to send me the following
reply about the UP slogans. He also gave me permission to forward this to
the list.

The slogans were created by UP employees. This was part of a 1979 safety
slogan contest for employees. "Trucking on down the track" was created by
Elizabeth Wickersham, wife of John A. Wickelrsham, an engineer running out
of
Las Vegas, NV.
Winners were selected from each operating division, headquarters and
retirees
in May, 1979. The 19 slogans were applied to cabooses as they received
heavy
shopping.

The 1979 winners were:

Keep on Truckin'...By Train

Safety Aware, Because We Care

Please, Let's Don't Meet by Accident

Safety Reigns On Our Train

Safety A Life Savings Account

U.P.permost in Safety

Safety is an Equal Opportunity ofr All

Safety Pays Dividends If You Pay Interest

Don't Get Carried Away, Think Safety

Absence of Accidents Depends on Presence of Mind

We're Moving the Future Today

Go Big Train

Energy's the GAme, UP's the Name

What do We do? We Work for You

Put it Here - We'll Get it There

Trucking on Down the Track

America, We're Pulling for You

Have Train Will Travel

We Want to Entertrain You

There were other caboose safety slogans created in earlier years as well
during the 70s. In 1980 another contest was held to created "energy saving"
slogans which were on signs mounted on locomotive walkway handrails behind
the
cab.

My ex Union Pacific caboose, UP 25428 has a large white panel painted on
each side with the slogan "Trucking on Down the Track" with the name
"Elizabeth C. Wickersham" printed under it followed by the city name
"Las Vegas."

I'm assuming the Ms. Wickersham was the person that suggested the slogan
and that she is or was from Las Vegas.

Can anybody tell me more? Was she an employee, a schoolchild in a "UP"
town or ? I've seen other slogans but I never bothered to record them
since I wasn't interested until we got this caboose.

Can anybody list others?

Thanks for the help,

Greg
