There are many others: The defunct New York, Ontario, and Western was known,
at the road's urging, as "Owen W." (O and W); that's similar to the trailers
here that ran for the Pacific and Atlantic trucking line having a black and
white bear on them - P and A -> Panda.
The Saint Louis - Southwestern was known as the Cotton Belt because of the
territory it served.
Anybody care to add more nicknames?
Great list, Paul. I'll add a couple:
Maryland and Pennsylvania Ma and Pa
San Diego and Arizona Slow, Dirty, and Aggravating
In the case of the SD&A, I'm guessing that the nickname was pretty accurate
given the terrain it had to travel.
Paul J. Pakus But wise old I

N6KWC Ogden Nash
Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo (TH&B) -- To Hell & Back
After a ride on this line at 80mph in their old heavyweight coaches,
one understood what this nickname was all about!
Neil Carlson
Santa Cruz
It was also known as "Prince George, Eventually" in honor (???) of the
amount of time it took for the railhead to get there.
I don't recall seeing anything regarding Canadian National & Canadian
Pacific written here yet so:
CNR - Certainly No Rush
CPR - Chinese Pacific

"A bad day railfanning beats a good day at work, every time!!"
Chicago & North Western (CNW) - Cardboard & No Wheels
Burlington Northern (BN) - Big Nothing
Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific (CMStP & P a.k.a.
Milwaukee Road) - C'Mon Stop Praying & Push
Illinois Central Gulf (ICG) - I can't go
That's the best I can do - signed, an ATSF fan
p.s. We always used to call the Rock Island, "the CRAP," short
and bastardized from the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific.
Too bad that road died!

Thanks, /bob/. My brow had not yet unfurrowed when I read your post.
But ... if the "Commodore" (for he was not) got control of it,
nickel plated or not, how did it then ultimately fall into the
Pennsy's hands? Or am I confusing it with the Wabash?

Where does the nickname "Nickel Plate" come from?

I remember the 700's (2-8-4s) had "Nickel Plate Road" on their tender and
a very little nyc&stl up on the top of the coal bunker.
Paradise is pacing a fast train on a Harley FXR Lowrider!
> Commodore Vanderbilt bought the NYC&StL after it was built in direct
> competition with his NYC&HR during the 1880's. When queried on what it
> cost he commented "for what I paid for it, it should be Nickel Plated" (
> or words to that effect).
While the quote is properly (?) attributed to the Commodore, there
was no competition with the NYC&HR, which only ran as far west as
Buffalo. The competition was with his western connection, the Lake
Shore and Michigan Southern.

The bilders of the Nickel Plate bilt it to compete with the Lake Shore
and Michigan Sothern form Buffalo NY to Chicago and another NYC
subsidiary going to St Louis. They then sold it to the NYC at a high
price hence NICKEL PLATE (as if the tracks and equiptment were nickel
plated and worth a lot)
It is a true story I'm told by several books
Some of us with the PV's have referred to amfleet as "spam cans" or as a
fluted tank train.
