COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
Director of Media Relations: Within AFSC=92s structure of collaborative
decision-making and cooperation, responsible to the Director,
Communications, for AFSC=92s national-level news media relations. The
Director works with national and regional staff in placing AFSC news,
perspectives, and story ideas with major news media; responds to media; and
advises and assists regionally-based staff in work with their local media.
Requires: Five years of experience in the news media in a role of
reporter, editor, producer, columnist or wire service writer; ability to
work with short and multiple deadlines; experience producing and scripting
videos preferred; availability to attend evening and weekend meetings and

COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIVISION
National Maquiladora Project Director: Serves as the focal point for
assuring progress toward the particular objectives of the Border Program
regarding the phenomenon of the maquiladora and its meaning. Guidance is
provided by the Border Program Director and the CRD Division Director.
Support also comes from the Border Program Task Force and Maquiladora Task
Force. Requires: Experience at the Mexico-U.S. Border and familiarity
with and knowledge of the social, political, and economic dynamics and
trends of the Border region and initiatives of border-based activists;
experience working collaboratively with others to develop program
direction, objectives, strategies, and work plans;
community/labor/coalition organizing experience and demonstrated ability to
work closely and productively with community-based staff; fluency in
written and oral communications in English and Spanish; supervisory
experience; and the availability to travel extensively. This position will
be located in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas (McAllen/Harlingen/Brownsville

Quaker Representative/Quaker House Director (Two Positions): The Quaker
United Nations programs reflect the historic concern of Friends for
developing and strengthening international institutions of peace. The
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), which administers the New York
Quaker UN Office on behalf of Friends World Committee for Consultation
(FWCC), is seeking a couple (or two persons in an established relationship)
to represent FWCC and AFSC at the UN on issues of concern to Friends
including human rights, peace and demilitarization, and sustainable
development. The Quaker UN Representative, who is a member of the Religious
Society of Friends, manages the Quaker UN office and supervises its staff.
The office monitors actions at the UN and, where possible, offers
assistance to UN community members (diplomats, non-governmental
organizations, secretariat staff) in moving forward with their agenda. The
Quaker House Director is responsible for maintaining Quaker House and
establishes an atmosphere which supports program goals as well as oversees
the physical upkeep of the facility. The UN responsibilities require a
background demonstrating the ability to work with people of differing
backgrounds and ideologies; experience with analysis and interpretation of
international social, economic, and political developments; skills in
writing and editing materials for publication in English; and conference or
seminar organization experience. A special quality of the work is the
result of informal, off-the-record meetings and discussions in Quaker

PEACE EDUCATION DIVISION
Assistant Coordinator, Latin America/Caribbean Program: Part-time (3/5)
two-year position. Responsible to the Coordinator, Latin America/Caribbean

rights, demilitarization, and US policy with a particular focus on resource
development and communication strategy issues. Requires: Minimum of four
years=92 experience in work on Latin America or Caribbean issues; excellent

Freeman Youth Peace Fellow: Nine-month fellowship provides opportunity to
increase understanding of peace issues and use of skills to make a concrete
contribution to the peace work of the AFSC. Activities provide the fellow
with an informal extension of their on-going education through first-hand
observations, study of issues, and consultation with program staff.
Requires: Commitment to working on peace, non-violence, and equality
issues; ability to read Spanish; experience in research and analysis;

organizer or popular educator to coordinate two-year, Central-Valley-wide
program supported by the James Irvine Foundation. The program will
identify, bring together, support, and assist leaders in immigrant
communities who are organizing for citizenship and civic action among
immigrant people and want to share and expand their own experience,
knowledge, and skills. Requires: Fluency in Spanish; Asian language
skills and experience in addressing issues of concern to immigrant women
are desirable. The Coordinator is directed from the AFSC area office in
Sacramento although she or he may be located elsewhere if necessary.

assigned subjects at the Cambodian School for Prosthetics and Orthotics in
Phnom Penh, a three-year program which began in 1994 to train Cambodians to
internationally recognized standards. Requires: Degree or diploma in
Prosthetics and Orthotics from recognized school; minimum three years as
practicing Prosthetist/Orthotist; teaching/training experience desirable
(Third World experience preferred); ability to work independently and as a
