[The Russians sure know how to solve their problems]
Jewish Lawmaker's Allies Threatened in Russia
By ANNA DOLGOV Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW (AP) -- Political allies of a prominent Russian liberal
lawmaker gunned down last week have been receiving death threats
since her slaying, a party member said Wednesday.
Dmitry Shagin, an artist who heads the Northern Capital movement
organized by lawmaker Galina Starovoitova, said that he and his
colleagues have been receiving telephone threats since her death
Friday, Russian news reports said.
Russian media have suggested that Starovoitova may have been killed
to prevent Northern Capital from winning local parliamentary elections
in St. Petersburg set for Dec. 6.
Starovoitova, 52, also a leader of the reformist Russia's Democratic
Choice party, was shot to death by unidentified assailants on the
stairs of her apartment building in St. Petersburg.
The killing of such a prominent politician has caused an uproar in
Russia and prompted calls from all sides for a crackdown on the
country's growing lawlessness. Scores of business leaders and others
have been gunned down in recent years in contract killings that are
almost never solved.
President Clinton on Wednesday also condemned the attack, calling
the killing ``a terrible loss for friends of democracy around the
world.''
Starovoitova's aide, 27-year-old Ruslan Linkov, suffered serious
head wounds during the attack. Doctors described his condition
Wednesday as ``moderately serious,'' the ITAR-Tass news agency
reported.
Linkov talked to police after regaining consciousness earlier this
week, but investigators said they learned nothing significant.
The Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified detective as saying
that police believed ``the contract for murdering Starovoitova
originated from St. Petersburg, not Moscow,'' as investigators
earlier suggested. The detective gave no other details.

French bishop refuses to baptise member of National Front
Agence France-Presse
POITIERS, France, Nov 21 (AFP) - A French bishop refused to baptise
a member of the extreme-right National Front in February because the p
arty's beliefs went against the values of the Church, French newspaper
Le Monde reported in its weekend edition on Saturday.
The Bishop of Poitiers, Albert Rouet, confirmed the story to AFP on
Saturday.
"I explained to the person who wanted a baptism that the ideology of
the National Front went against the message of Christ and the Church,"
he said.
"But I did not shut the door on him and I encouraged him to think it
over, so that he could choose between the Christian faith and his
political beliefs."
Bishop Rouet, a former president of the Social Commission of French
Bishops, said it was not the first time that he had refused to
baptise a member of the Front and added that he often asked people
to think about their Christian faith before being baptised.
The National Front, led by Jean-Marie Le Pen, regularly attracts more
than ten percent of votes in French national elections with its
virulently anti-immigrant stance.

French National Front leaders pay for racist comments
PARIS, Nov 25 (AFP) - Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the extreme-right
National Front, and his deputy Bruno Megret were ordered on Wednesday
to pay compensation to a French Jewish organisation after making
racist comments.
A Paris court ordered the two to pay 10,000 francs (1,800 dollars) to
the French union of Jewish students for having stated that
inequalities
exist among different races.
They were also told to publish, at their own cost, the court ruling
in three national and three weekly national newspapers.
The court found the National Front leader guilty of having said "I
believe in the inequality of races" during a summer school run by his
party in August 1996.
Megret was found guilty of saying that he believed in the "superiority
of of one race over another" during a television broadcast in
February 1997.
The court ruled that given their political positions they had
committed an "abuse of the freedom of expression" which was
tantamount to an attack on the Jewish students union.
Megret's wife Catherine was acquitted for comments she made in the
German daily Berliner Zeitung in February 1997 about "genetic
differences between races."
The Jewish students union, the only association filing a civil suit
in the case, welcomed the ruling.
The group's lawyer Stephane Lilti had also attacked Le Pen for his
March 1997 remarks to the New Yorker that the Nazi German gas chambers
of World War II, which killed millions, were "an historical detail."
Le Pen, 70, also plans to appeal against a one-year ban on holding or
standing for office imposed on him by a court for beating up a woman
Socialist Party candidate during a general election campaign in 1997.
The appeal gives him a good chance of being able to run for the
French presidency again in 2002.

British Far Right Party spokesman causes storm at "modern" Politically
Correct private school.
(NNA-UK) In Britain, it is not just the schools that are controlled
directly by the state, that have succumbed to the thought control
process marketed as Political Correctness. Dulwich College in London,
the £13,000 a year private school, showed its adhesion to this social
psychosis by its behavior towards a spokesman for the British National
Party and later by its pandering to the controlled media.
One of the school's pupils, ironically an Asian, had invited Michael
Newland, the press officer of the BNP, to speak to the school's
political society so that in practice, the school could experience
the politics of as many different parts of the political spectrum
as possible.
When the news of Newland's visit had leaked out, the chairman of
a quasi-official body known as the Commission for Racial Equality,
a Negro with the comically august name Sir Herman Ouseley, petered
out his comments of disapproval of the school's behavior. Sir Ousely
stated that the school was wrong to invite the BNP as it gave the
BNP credibility it did not deserve, stating that the invitation was
unwise and not in the best interests of the children. Ouseley's
African heritage may explain his stance since in Africa, they are
not use to having living people in the same country with opinions
that differ from them.
The Deputy Master at Dulwich College then wrote an explanatory
semi-apologetic letter to The Times explaining what had taken
place. In the letter Chris Field, the school's Deputy Master,
denounced the BNP spokesman's point of view and stated what a
hard time that the pupils had given him, even to the point of
converting him to Multiculturalism. This knee jerk reaction to
the comments of Ouseley, and a little deliberate antagonism by
the media, shows a lack of courage to set as an example with which
to bring children up and educate them. The more astute children
amongst the pupils of Dulwich College will have noticed the double
standards and the intrigued interest that this cultivates can only
benefit the BNP.

Australian party official faces possible charges on cannibal comments
Agence France-Presse
SYDNEY, Nov 22 (AFP) - One of the leaders of Australia's far-right One
Nation party faced possible legal action Sunday after calling
Aborigines cannibals during an election stop.
"They (Aborigines) have been killing and eating each other for 40,000
years," chief strategist David Oldfield said in response to a query
about the populist party's opposition to special government benefits
for Aborigines.
The comment was picked up clearly by television microphones covering
a parliamentary election Saturday in the seat of Newcastle -- delayed
by the death of a candidate and which One Nation lost to the
opposition
Labor party -- and Aboriginal activists were quick to threaten court
action Sunday.
"It is incorrect to start with, and for him to resort to it, in a fit
of anger, makes clear what he and the party are thinking about, where
they are coming from," Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins told The
Sun-Herald newspaper.
"It's absolutely disgusting but it is something all decent Australians
should be aware is the philosophy of the One Nation party. It is a
party full of rednecks and fascists."
Perkins said he would investigate the options for a legal challenge
of Oldfield's comments.
"Obviously there's a limited area of scope for such action, but we'll
investigate that possibility," he added.
"It's an indictment on Australian society that this man could even
presume to run a political party and come out with such disgusting
comments."
The comment by Oldfield, one of One Nation founder Pauline Hanson's
closest advisers, revived the controversial allegation that
Aborigines,
like some indigenous tribes in neighboring Papua New Guinea and South
Pacific island nations such as Fiji, had a history of cannibalism.
In the past, some white anthropologists have claimed that Aborigines
practiced ritual cannibalism. But those claims have been discounted
by historians and Aborigines in recent years.
Oldfield said he welcomed the potential legal action because it would
provide an opportunity for what he called the "true" Aboriginal
history to be exposed.
Australians had to understand Aboriginal people were not "frolicking
by the seashore collecting shells, and just having a happy-go-lucky
family existence and then we suddenly arrived and killed them all,"
he said.
"That is not what happened and most Australians are tired of being
told time and time again that's what happened and it doesn't help
the Aboriginal people to have someone like Charlie Perkins ramming
it down our throats."
Oldfield accused Perkins of being a racist for suggesting Aborigines
were the only race in the South Pacific who did not partake in
cannibalism.
"That in a sense, is a slur on all the peoples of the South Pacific.
.. It is pointless to try and deny the truth of history in an effort
to have Aboriginal people compensated by virtue of guilt."
Also Sunday, One Nation members in the state of Victoria were meeting
to dissect their losses in last month's federal election.
The state branch of the anti-immigration party were also considering
a constitution which would change the party's power center, taking it
out of the hands of Hanson, Oldfield, and national director David
Ettridge.
Hanson, who lost her seat in the October 3 poll, and the "two Davids"
now control all of the party's policy and staffing decisions under
the current structure

Rapper Coolio on Trial for theft and assualt in Germany
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) - Grammy-winning U.S. rapper Coolio appeared
in court today to face theft and assault charges almost one year
after his arrest for allegedly punching a saleswoman during a
European tour.
Police officials say Coolio and six members of his group left a
boutique in a Stuttgart suburb last Nov. 20 without paying for
clothing worth $2,000. The rapper is accused of hitting the
saleswoman in the stomach when she confronted the group.
German lawyer Georg Prasser was representing Coolio at the trial,
expected to last four days.
Coolio has denied the charges. He and the group had gone to the
boutique to pick up free outfits promised them by a clothing company,
according to Coolio's German manager, Juergen Sauer. The group later
returned the clothes, but that did not constitute an admission of
guilt, Sauer said.
Police arrested Coolio in Frankfurt, 90 miles to the north. The group
was released after posting $167,000 bail and was allowed to finish
its tour. None of the group's members is on trial.
Coolio, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., won a Grammy for
best rap solo in 1996 for ``Gangsta's Paradise,'' which was featured
in the film ``Dangerous Minds.''
He was arrested in September in Los Angeles for carrying a concealed
weapon and possessing marijuana after police pulled him over for
driving on the wrong side of a street.

Ex-Zimbabwe president convicted on sodomy charges, flees
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - A former president was convicted today of
sodomy and homosexual assault for illicit relations with members
of his presidential staff, and prosecutors confirmed that he has
fled Zimbabwe.
Canaan Banana, a former president and Methodist minister, left the
country Nov. 17 and was seeking political asylum in neighboring
Botswana, said Chief Prosecutor Augustine Chikumira. Zimbabwe will
seek his extradition, he said.
The offenses attributed to Banana mostly involved bodyguards, a
cook and a gardener on his presidential staff. They took place
during his time in office, after independence in 1980 until 1987.
Prosecutors alleged Banana used his authority to force the
individuals into homosexual acts.
Banana, who was found guilty on all 11 counts, faces a maximum
sentence of about 22 years in prison. He is to be sentenced Dec. 10.
Judge Godfrey Chidyausiku issued an arrest warrant and ordered
Banana's bail revoked. The former president had been free on $600
bail, and had surrendered his passport and the deed to his mansion
in the exclusive Mount Pleasant suburb of Harare.
The judge urged defense lawyer Chris Andersen to try to persuade
Banana to return to Zimbabwe for sentencing.
The case has deeply embarrassed President Robert Mugabe, who insists
that homosexuality is foreign to African culture and was brought to
the continent from the West. He has described same-sex partners as
``lower than pigs and dogs.''
Such opinions in southern Africa are not unusual. Government officials
of nearby Namibia and Zambia have made similar anti-gay statements.
South Africa has bucked the trend and recently decriminalized gay
sex.
In his defense during a three-week trial in June, Banana said the
charges were an attempt to destroy his character and standing amid
rumors he was planning a political comeback.
Banana's presidency - which after the former British colony of
Rhodesia became independent Zimbabwe - was a ceremonial post, but
he was constitutional head of Zimbabwe when Mugabe, the nation's
only political ruler, was prime minister.
The ceremonial presidency and prime minister's position were
abolished in 1987, and Mugabe assumed the mantle of executive
president.
Banana was brought to trial after a police inspector shot dead a
colleague who had taunted him as ``Banana's wife.''
Policeman Jefta Dube, serving a 10-year prison term for that murder,
said he was forced into a three-year sexual relationship with Banana
between 1984 and 1986.

Infants for Sale in Vietnam
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Babies are for sale at an underground market
in Ho Chi Minh City, according to a newspaper report.
The Dai Doan Ket newspaper reported Wednesday that four to seven
pregnant women willing to sell their babies are often in front of
the city's main Ben Thanh market.
Prices range from $215 to $1,070 depending on the infant's sex and
whether it has an official birth certificate, the newspaper said.
Vietnam's annual income is about $340 per person.
The women at the market said they used to get abortions, but they
now go ahead and have the babies for the money. Some told the
newspaper this was not the first time they had sold their babies.
The newspaper said many of the women were prostitutes.
Child trafficking has been on the rise in Vietnam, thanks to
foreigners wanting to adopt. Earlier this year, police in southern
An Giang province arrested six people on charges of child trafficking.

Mossad operations chief resigns
JERUSALEM (November 25) Mossad director Ephraim Halevy has accepted
the resignation of his chief of operations, known as "Y," following
the capture of two Israeli agents in Cyprus earlier this month.
According to reports, further personnel changes are expected,
including the appointment of two people, one a former Mossad
official, to positions in the operations division. According to
the Ha'aretz newspaper, "Y" offered to step down following the
November 6 arrest of Udi Hargov and Yigal Damary at the Cypriot
fishing village Ziyi.
Earlier this year "Y" asked to resign after five Mossad agents
were arrested in Berne, Switzerland, trying to install a wiretap
in the building where the wife of Lebanese immigrant Abdullah Zein
lives. Halevy reportedly turned down his request, declaring "Y"
was not responsible for the foul-up.
Sources close to "Y" said he had been the unit's chief for three
years, but for some time had been considering retiring and going
into business. With the arrest of the two agents in Cyprus, he
reportedly asked Halevy to speed up the process.
The sources said "Y" was not responsible for the botched
assassination attempt on Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in Jordan
last year. They added that his resignation did not come as a
surprise, as he believed it was up to him to take the blame.
Meanwhile, Cypriot officials have reportedly turned down requests
by the families of Damary and Hargov to visit them in prison. The
two are allowed to receive mail from their families and are visited
frequently by the Israeli consul in Cyprus.
Their trial is scheduled to begin on December 8, and they face a
maximum espionage penalty of 10 years. However, Israeli officials
have expressed hope the two will be returned to Israel.

[Just months after voting the Social Democratics into office, plans
to build a Holy Holocaust Theme Park in Berln move ahead leaving
votes scratching their heads in disbelief.]
Berlin mayor backs Spielberg archive for memorial
BERLIN, Nov 24 (Reuters) - The mayor of Berlin Tuesday backed a
proposal to make U.S. film director Steven Spielberg's Shoah
Foundation video library part of Germany's planned Holocaust
memorial.
Mayor Eberhard Diepgen said a memorial where visitors could mourn
the six million Jews killed by the Nazis and also learn about the
Holocaust was a better idea than the current proposal for a gigantic,
more abstract monument.
``I can imagine a solution which would combine a national memorial
with information about the murder of the European Jews,'' Diepgen
told the weekly newspaper Die Woche.
``This combination would offer the chance to get away from abstract
portrayal and would also offer the certainty that young people will
still know what it's about if they visit the place in 50 years'
time,'' Diepgen said.
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's cultural affairs supremo, Michael
Naumann, has expressed doubts about the current draft plan for a
memorial -- composed of 2,700 concrete pillars spread out over a
two-hectare (4.9-acre) site in central Berlin.
Naumann suggested last month that the Shoah Foundation, which holds
some 50,000 videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors gathered
by Spielberg, could be housed in Berlin as part of a more
``interactive'' Holocaust memorial.
Diepgen welcomed the idea and suggested the memorial could be built
in an area known as the ``Topography of Terror,'' where several
Nazi agencies had their headquarters, rather than the current
proposed site, next to the Brandenburg Gate.
Diepgen said he had written to Spielberg and also hoped to speak
to Schroeder and Naumann about the idea.
He said he could never imagine backing the old draft, designed
by U.S. architect Peter Eisenman, which had the support of
Schroeder's predecessor Helmut Kohl.

[I wonder when Israel will return Palestinian property?]
Czechs To Return Jewish Property
PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- The Czech government has established
a commission to return Jewish property confiscated during World War
II, a Jewish community official said Thursday.
The commission, to include members of the government and the Czech
Federation of Jewish Communities, is to map out by March all property
that has not been restituted, Alena Rubesova said.
The state has already returned about 80 percent of confiscated
Jewish properties which it held.
Restitution was delayed by 40 years of communism, which ended here
in 1989, and subsequently by insufficient legislation. About 120,000
Jews lived on Czech territory before the Holocaust. Now there are
about 6,000.
The government plans to return to surviving Holocaust victims all
remaining property confiscated by the Nazis during World War II.
It will also create a fund for compensation where restitution is
impossible.
Besides the state-held properties, the Federation of Jewish
Communities demands return of property now owned by municipalities
and individuals. About half of the 202 properties are yet to be
returned.
