Pre-conference Techworks Bootcamp - Two Day (Sat & Sun)

PMDF 101 Bootcamp: PMDF for Mail and Systems Administrators (#1592)

Speaker: Stephen Arnold

Abstract

This bootcamp provides email administrators/postmasters and system managers
the background knowledge, theory, and practical advice needed to install,
configure, and manage PMDF mail hubs and backbones. In the principles &
configuration discussion, attendees learn where PMDF fits into their network
environment and how it communicates with other message transfer agents. A
detailed discussion of channels, the fundemental building blocks of PMDF
configurations, describes channel types and functions. Attendees learn how
PMDF routes mail by the destination domain during address rewriting and how
to configure rewrite rules and channel definitions.

Moving on to operational PMDF topics, attendees learn how remote clients
access mailboxes on PMDF servers, and how VMS and UNIX native stores, the
PMDF POPstore, and the PMDF Message store are configured and used.
Day-to-day PMDF activities, such as postmastering and monitoring, are
reviewed. PMDF security and data integrity topics include configuring PMDF
security, including port-, send-, and mail-access mappings and the security
configuration file, and calling anti-virus software from the conversion
channel. Demonstrations show PMDF security features for relay blocking,
spam blocking, and mailbox filtering. Attendees are also taught how to
analyze and report spam incidents.

The instructor has extensive PMDF experience and can address features,
questions, and issues regarding PMDF on OpenVMS, UNIX, and Windows NT/2000.
Discussion covers all three platforms, and demonstrations are on OpenVMS and
Windows NT Server.

PREREQUISITES: It is assumed that attendees are system managers for
electronic mail servers on OpenVMS, UNIX, or Windows NT/2000 and that they
can effectively manage the operating environment.
