Can somebody help?

I recently received a two part message (black dot to the left). The
parts were "Plain Text" and "Binary Data". When I opened the plain
text it said:

[[MAPI 1.0 embedded message: 4906 in WINMAIL.DAT]]]

When I opened the binary data and pushed the "Save" button, the
default filename was "untitled." I changed the name to save as
"winmail.dat".

I am wondering if anybody can offer advice on what to do with this
saved file. If I bring it up in a text editor, there is some text but
mostly a lot of "garbage" characters. Is there perhaps another
program I can use to convert or decode this file?

Thanks,

Ken

I don't think the winmail.dat file is .rtf format. The software we
use just throws it away, as all it contains is information about
fonts, colors, etc. It doesn't actually contain message text or
anything of that nature, and it's apparently only useful when sent to
someone with the same mail client.

Sounds like someone is using Exchange!

As I understand it, Win95's mail package sends RTF codes as an attachment
to their e-mail messages, so

<sarcasm>
other similarly afflicted people can read their mail with all the nice
BOLD and UNDERLINE and COLORS that you intended.

For some of us, plain text is enough to get our messages across. ;-)
</sarcasm>

You should be able to save the file -- try saving with an .rtf extension
-- and then double clicking it from within Explorer/FileManager. It
should open your wordprocessor and format the mail message oh so nicely.

Tell the idio ... oops person who sent you this message to TURN OFF
RTF in Exchange.

I think it is readable by microsoft word and Windows 95 wordpad.

I have a friend that uses MS Exchange that sends me mail just like Kenneth
describes. However, I have not been able to "read" the binary part using
.doc, .wri, or rtf extensions.... Like Sidney, I assumed it to be a RTF
"feature", but I'm not sure now...

Winmail.dat contains the mime codings for a message written in Microsoft
Exchange. It is of no value to you so there is no point in bothering with it. I
got yelled at by everyone on a mailing list for using Microsoft Exchange
because it adds this file to every message.

Whoever sent you the message is using Exchange and cannot see the file. If you
had received it with Exchange you wouldn't have seen it. For more info on this
file and a fix to turn it off, checkout Windows Annoyances at
www.creativelement.com/win95ann/

That is exactly why I changed to Pegasus. Got tired of being yelled at. Glad
they did! ;-)

As I recall that's the rich (formatted) text equivalent of the plain text
message your received in part 1. Try saving it to a file and then opening it
with a viewer/editor that supports multiple file formats.

For info on what the winmail.dat file is, take a look at the Windows95
Annoyances Page located at http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann/

You'll find lots of other goodies there.
