Qualification: Required. Bachelor=92s Degree, plus 2-3 years of relev=

Experience with HTML, XML and Web page creation. Strong background in
computer programming, including such languages as Perl, C++, Java, or
VBScript. Strong skills using Windows NT, Windows 95/98 and Unix oper=

systems. Ability to work well with the Libraries and Computing & Info=
rmation
Technology staff, commercial hardware/software vendors and regional/n=
ational
library computer organizations, such as OCLC, DRA, etc. Organizationa=

planning, problem solving and interpersonal skills required to effect=

Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a talented and dynamic
Director for its Veterinary Library.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Guide library in its partnership with College research,
teaching, clinical, and extension programs. Provide administrative vision
and leadership including effective management of financial, physical, and
human resources. Supervise and participate in collection development,
preservation, and public and technical services. Actively foster
innovation in information management; integrate electronic resources and
services into the library; and conduct creative outreach and instruction.
Contribute to research projects, professional activities, and development.

QUALIFICATIONS: MLS or equivalent graduate degree. Minimum five years of
professional library experience with significant portion in academia.
Highly desirable: experience in veterinary or biomedical librarianship and
a subject background in the life sciences. Demonstrated administrative
ability, collaborative and organizational strength, and strong
communication and interpersonal skills. Enthusiasm and optimism for
libraries' roles in the evolving information landscape. Knowledge of life
science -- especially biomedical and animal science -- resources in print,
electronic, and other formats. Excellent understanding of information
technologies' potential for enhancing services. Ability to motivate
personnel and operate within a collegial framework of faculty, staff,
students, and administrators. Demonstrated commitment to professional
growth and active involvement in professional activities.

$550,000 annual budget, 7 FTE staff, and one of the world's finest
collections of veterinary resources serves Cornell's College of Veterinary

lecture halls, the library is a unit of the Cornell University Library

The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications an=

Department. The successful candidate will lead a department that is
aggressively developing and delivering user-centered services to enab=

ready access to resources both physically and electronically. The
department comprises four professionals and 41 support staff providin=

circulation, bookstack maintenance, reserves (print and electronic),
current periodicals, interlibrary loan/document delivery, microforms=

media center, and security services. A new laptop computer lending
program is being developed and will operate from the reserves area, a=

a pilot project to offer loans of digital readers ("electronic books"=

is planned. With other public services units, the department deliver=

rich array of services supporting teaching and learning for users bo=

on- and off-campus, with special emphasis on support for the
university's distance education programs. The library provides

Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Public
Services, has responsibility for developing and managing an integrat=
ed
service environment for the functions of circulation, bookstack
maintenance, course reserves, current periodicals access, interlibrar=

loan/document delivery, microforms, laptop computer lending, and
audiovisual service. Recommends, communicates, and administers fair,
efficient circulation and access policies for the main library and fo=
ur
branches. Responsible for policy formulation and coordination of
circulation/reserve functions in the library=92s integrated online
system. Leads the library in defining and creating an innovative
Multimedia Services Initiative, which will provide space, equipment, =
and
staff to assist patrons in using the growing range of multimedia,
full-text/image, and other non-print materials. Works cooperatively
with the library=92s facilities manager and with the campus public sa=
fety
office to ensure a safe and secure environment for users and staff.
Works closely with branch librarians at NC State and with colleagues=
in
the region and the state to improve responsiveness of circulation and
interlibrary lending services. Develops departmental goals and
objectives, prepares budget requests, manages budget allocations, and
participates actively in library-wide planning processes. Serves as=
a
member of the Libraries' Management Council and Public Services Heads
group. Is active professionally.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS and 5 years relevant professional
experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in circulation and/or interlibrary loan operations and in
management/supervision. Demonstrated commitment to providing highly
responsive public service. Understanding of the mission of a researc=
h
university and of the changing educational environment. Excellent
interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, =
and
personably, orally and in writing. Evidence of effective collaboratio=
n
with faculty and students. Ability to lead and excel in a team
environment. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development.

Preferred: Demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative
programs and services that advance organizational goals.
