I'm Richard Sweeney, the chairman of the ALA/Mecklermedia Library of the
Future Award Committee for 1996. See the purpose described below.

If you know of a library that is deserving of this award, even your own,
please let me know or recommend that they submit an application to me
before December 1, 1995.

Fell free to send this to anyone you think may be interested or to
another appropriate listserv.

The award will be given at the ALA annual conference in New York City
next July. The winner can be in any type of library. If you email me at
the address below with your fax number I'll fax you the simple 2 page
application form. If you already have a description of your project,
applying is a cinch. Please call if you have questions.

The award winner will get a check for $2500, a Tiffany Cyrstal and really
valuable public relations. December 1, 1995 is the final application date.

The ALA/MECKLERMEDIA LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE AWARD
"The purpose of the award is to honor an individual library, library
consortium, group of librarians, or support organization for innovative
planning for, applications of, or development of patron training programs
about information technology in a library setting."

Last year, the committee decided that the paragraph really should have
had a comma after the words.. "programs about,..." It was clear that the
intention was not just training. The previous winners were not just
focused on training.

Selection Criteria include the benefit to the clients served;
benefit to the technology information community; impact on library
operations; public relations value; and the impact on the perception
of the librarian or librarian in the work setting and to the specialized
and/or general public."

The 1995 winner was the University of Minnesota - Borchert Map Library

The 1994 winner was The University of Iowa Libraries - Information Arcade

The 1993 winner was Albert R. Mann Library, Cornell University, Ithica, NY

The nominations are supposed to be sent to me first with six copies.

The institutions which applied last year, but did not win, are still
eligible to reapply.

Thanks,

Richard T. Sweeney

Philip - Should we go for it?? I did an application for last year which
should be in the files. I would not be that hard to rework it.
