QUARTERDECK CUTS STAFF, CITES WIN 98-RELATED SALES SLOWDOWN
(Source: InfoWorld Electric) Quarterdeck is cutting its staff
because of expected weak financial results, the company said,
citing slow end-user sales of PC software, possibly due to
customers who have been waiting for the release on Thursday of
Windows 98.

... And 3 years ago:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wall Street Journal, 9 Jan 1995 p. B4

"SYMANTEC CORP.
Third-Quarter Results Seen Below Analysts' Estimates

Symantec Corp. said its results for the fiscal third quarter ended
Dec. 31 are expected to fall below analysts' estimates. (snip)
Mr. Eubanks said sales of Symantec's software were *partly*
[emphasis added] dependent on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 95 operating
system. He said sales of the retail version of Windows 95 'have been
slower than we thought they would be.'"
-------------------------------------------------------------------

... and Corel...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"The market absorption of Windows 95 has not yet met industry
expectations," commented Corel's chief executive officer,
Dr. Michael Cowpland. "As a result, 32-bit applications like
CorelDRAW 6 that are designed to work on Windows 95 and Windows
NT have had a slower market penetration than we originally expected.
Preliminary financial results indicate that this delayed market
acceptance together with launch costs will have a material adverse
affect on the fourth quarter financial results of the company,
notwithstanding its record sales."
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone see a pattern here? :-)

So by betting their companies on Windows exclusivelly, Symantec, Corel,
and now Quarterdeck, were all financially hurt.

Imho, they all missed the os/2 boat, and have all missed the java boat
now... I guess they'll never learn that once you get on M$'s side,
sooner or later you are assimilated.

Getting back to the quarterdeck announcement... How can they blame
'slow sales' for a product that has been on the market less than a month???

Just my $0.02

Joining QuarterDeck, Qualitas, MultiSoft etc. All with their best of
breed products obsoleted by MS's good enough replacements. More to come?

do they sell less Win versions than OS/2 ??? <veg>

but on a more serious note, once everyone has moved to FAT32, the guys
at PowerQuest should warm up at the thought of being obsoleted as so
many other companies in the Windows market before them....

As compared to the OS/2 companies like.....who? The best one Stardock
claims that only 4% of their sales come from OS/2.

Sorry, but OS/2 is no savior.

How so? Partition magic still works with NTFS and Fat32. Since even
Stardock claims that only 4% of their revenue comes from OS/2, the OS/2
market is not worth the effort.
