I need your help with installation of NetWare 3.12 (10 user) on a
Compaq Prosignia VS server (486/33 535MB). The server is an EISA
system with one Compaq 32-bit FAST SCSI-2 hard drive and an
integrated NetFlex-L ENET network adapter. I installed Netware on
the file server according to the "Installing Netware 3.12 on a
Compaq Server," an instruction sheet that was shipped with
Compaq" file server and its 10-user Netware 3.12. Everything
seemed to go fine.
But when I rebooted the server and selected "LAN Driver
Information" in the MONITOR module, the box was empty. Thismeant
that the LAN driver was not loaded. So I exited MONITOR to the
fileserver console and tried to load the LAN driver. First the
computer tried to load but then the screen displayed the
following message:
Loader cannot find public symbol: MSMGetTSMIFLevel.
Load file referenced undefined public variable.
Module Ethertsm.nlm not loaded.
Module PCNTNW.LAN cannot be loaded until Ethertsm is loaded.
Needed support modules are not present.
Module PCNTNW.LAN not loaded.
........
-----------------------------------------------
The content of the startup.ncf file is:
LOAD CPQSXPT
LOAD CPQS710
LOAD CPQSDISK
SET RESERVED BUFFERS BELOW 16 MEG=48
The content of the server's autoexec.ncf file is:
file server name TARR_SERVER
ipx internal net 2EF9E39A
load PCNTNW IOP=8800 FRAME=ETHERNET_802.2
bind IPX to PCNTNW net=1A
mount all
LOAD MONITOR.NLM
By the way, during installation, I did manage to load the driver
because there was no error message and the screen displayed:
IPX LAN protocol bound to AMD PCNTNW
However, according to "Installing NetWare 3.12 on a Compaq
Server," since the server has the integrated NetFlex-L ENET
controller, I should change PORT=8800 TO IOP=8800 and delete
INT=A in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file, and I did accordingly. This
morning, I put back the line INT=A into the AUTOEXEC.NCF and
still I got the error message "Cannot find load file PCNTNW."
Then, I tried to load the LAN driver manually by issuing "SERVER
-NA" command. The system prompted for the file server name and
the ipx internal number. I entered the information as required
and the system seemed happy. Then I used the following command to
load the LAN driver:
LOAD A:\NETWORK\PCNTNW IOP=8800 FRAME=ETHERNET_802.2
Again, the screen displayed the error message:
Loading module PCNTNW.LAN

What could possibly be the problem? Please advice. I'd be
grateful for your advice and suggestion. Thank you.

Highly overdone....
Shu, Something went wrong during installation. The lan-driver is
along the new 3.12/4.01 specs, which needs ethertsm (ethernet
transport support module) and msm/msm31x (media support module) NLM's
to run. These are normally autoloaded by the lan-driver & should be
present in the sys:system directory after proper installation with
install.nlm (after copying the system/public disks). On the dos
partition you only need server.exe + the disk-drivers in the
server.312 directory. After this, the autoexec.ncf can be accessed.
Two problems can be there:
- The 2 nlm's where not copied into sys:system. Solution copy them
by hand.
or:
- Some disk drivers will automount when accessing the autoexec.ncf
and some will not. If the compaq driver does not do this, then
(without a mounted volume) the lan-driver will not be able to
load the support NLM's. Solution: Put the mount command directly
behind the internal ipx number.
Also:
- Use a 'name=....' behind the load 'lan-driver' line. Much easier
when binding.
- Use ethernet_II frames, not the political 802.2 (only usefull
when using boot-proms).
Example (one of my autoexec's):
FILE SERVER NAME ZEUS
IPX INTERNAL NET C09C8014
-
LOAD LSLENH | ---> olny needed on 3.11
LOAD PBURST |
-
LOAD 3C527 SLOT=4 FRAME=ETHERNET_802.3 NAME=IPX_NET
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sorry, old history leaves me one raw 802.3, rest autoloads
ethertsm/msm31x.
BIND IPX TO IPX_NET NET=1
LOAD REMOTE ZEUS
LOAD RSPX

REMOVE DOS

Gives me 60K extra cache-buffers.
