On the DOS 5 with NB4.5a system that I am weaning myself from, I found
that I had increasding problems with Lingua printing--sometimes even
loading the driver was problemtic. The problems seemed memory related
(despite the "a"); I could always print from disk with no windows in
use. I sometimes suspected that the fault lay in my 386/25; it may not
have been fast enough to handle the memory management demands of the
upgrade without tripping over itself. I haven't tested the faster
system enough to know if the problems have disappeared (although my
Ibidem generate lockup seems to be cured).

I have now installed under win95; Dos printing spool is off, and so
is check port before printing. There is a Zip drive on the same port.
The first time I print, in NB or win, I get a paper out error (this is
with a HP5L). If I then open and close the printer properties (and
perhaps try to print a test page, producing the same error, and then
click cancel, not retry), the NB print job comes out of the printer.
For the rest of the day eveything prints as requested. The next morning
(I turn off the computer overnight), the same routine. Does anyone
know a way out of this little game, or a way to routinize the first
failure?

I am using the PCL driver for the HP5/6 family; is there a significant
difference to using the HB driver, or is that utterly impossible if there
is a Zip drive on the same port?
