The "display vocabulary" option returns the same number of occurrences as
the one reported on the top line of the display window, at least in the
version of Orbis that I have (fall 1994, I think).

About counting,

I've noticed the same problem with Orbis. Has anyone tried to see if the
concordance feature gives the same result? I haven't tried in a while, but
I seem to recall that the concordance list actually gives you each item,
and not merely each verse, in its immediate context.

Many thanks to James for posting the Sss utility. It does indeed seem
to do what I want Orbis to do -- give me an accurate count of all the
occurrences of a string in my database. Now, if I can just remember
the names of all the xpl programs I am accumulating and, more
importantly, what they do.
