I was wondering if anyone on this list could help me with a research
project? I am interested in finding the names of collecting
institutions which were started by women. I have a partial list which
includes:
Blaylor
Memorial Art Museum, Rochester, NY
Cummer
Joslyn
Whitney
MoMA (possibly)
Please let me know if you have any institutions to add, or any resources
I could use to research this information. Thank you in advance for any
help. Please reply on or off list. My address is che...@imls.fed.us
Thank you

Are you just assembling names? Or is this a deeper project. Mrs. Fisher,
for example, is the subject of my dissertation and a permanent collection
exhibition. As I do my research here in Southern California, I'll send
more names to you. By the way, Kathleen McCarthy, who I believe may still
be at the City University of New York (Center for the Study of
Philantrhopy), would be an excellent source of information. She has
already written three books on the subject of women and
philanthropy/patronage in the arts.
Best of luck with your project.

Hilla Rebay founded the Museum of Non-Objective Art, which later
expanded scope and became the Museum of Modern Art. Does that count,
since she didn't actually found the current incarnation?

Whose full name is:

Founded and still directed by:
Martha Longenecker
I worked there for a year; it's a beautiful museum. Let me know if you'd
like more information on it. They also have a web page, which I learned on
this list from the creators of it:

Toni Danilov is the founder of a startup museum called "Women of the West Muse
um" in Boulder CO. Betty Ford and the other "still-alive" first ladies are on
the board. Perhaps you can get more information from them at fax: 303-443-8486
.
I believe it is going to be open soon over there.

Under development right now is the Women of the West Museum, founded by
Toni Dewey. Boulder, CO
Here in Chicago there was or still is a Marie? Weber Museum, founded by
Ms. Weber back in the late 70s or early 80s. It was having troubles last
I heard, so it may be defunct.
Countless local history museums have been founded by <a> woman or a
group of them. Wasn't Colonial Williamsburg started by a group of local
women interested in preserving the town?
Peggy Gugenheim museum in Venice?
This is a very interesting line of research. I hope you will keep the
list posted regarding your findings.
All best!

I did not see your first list. However, the new Museum, Women of the West
Museum in Boulder Colorado was started by women- and about women. Also, the
Denver Art Museum began with a woman's group lead by Anne Evans, daughter of
former governor, John Evans back in 1894.(?) In addition, the Molly Brown
House got its incetive from Anne Love, wife of former governor, John Love in
1970. Today, the Museum is run by a woman, Leigh Grinstead.

I read a terrific book about the Stanford Museum. In it the author stated
that the Museum (NAMED for her son) was really FOR her son--a gift or
dedication, so to speak. A great story.
For my dissertation (patronage by women in Southern California, 1st half
20th century--in a nutshell) I am working on Mrs Elizabeth Holmes Fisher,
who built Fisher Gallery in 1939 for USC. During my research is when I
came across that book.
Best of luck with your re-opening.
