With Windows Server 2012 and later, administrators can add or remove roles and features either through the Server Manager console or with Windows PowerShell cmdlets. Administrators can use these tools to alter local servers, remote servers and offline VHD files.

Important Please try out this FoD, and verify that current applications and tools run on the preview release as expected. Also, try any server app (from Microsoft or not) that you want to use on Server Core but currently cannot use, and please let us know about any successes or failures.

The Add-WindowsCapability cmdlet does have a method for installing from a local package file. I've copied the example from the link here. The key is the -Source parameter which should point to the location of the CAB file containing the windows feature to be installed.

Extract the entire Windows Server 2019 Features On Demand ISO to a local directory on the server (e.g. C:\FOD).Open up the Windows 10 Features On Demand ISO and copy the following cab files to the directory with the extracted Windows Server 2019 Features On Demand files.OpenSSH-Client-Package31bf3856ad364e35amd64.cabOpenSSH-Server-Package31bf3856ad364e35amd64.cabRun the Add-WindowsCapability -online -name OpenSSH.Server0.0.1.0 -source C:\FODYou will then see the following output:

While Windows Admin Center provides a robust way to have centralized administration of your Windows Server 2022 Core operating systems, having the ability to have local management tools available can be extremely helpful in case the server is isolated or network connectivity is down. Having the ability to locally look at Event Viewer as an example, is extremely helpful if you are troubleshooting an issue.

After you have the Windows Server 2022 Core Features on Demand (FoD) installed, the tools installed can now easily be used to troubleshoot issues you may have on your Windows Server 2022 server. It includes looking at Event logs, troubleshooting disks, or pulling up Resource Monitor to get a more detailed look at processes, memory, disk, and network metrics.

In Part 1, I talked about at server installation time, there are two installation options: Server Core and Server with a GUI, available. And the third installation option, Minimal Server Interface, is configurable after an installation is completed. Minimal Server Interface is basically a Server Core installation with Server Manager and MMC. And as needed, an administrator can switch among the three installation options with Features on Demand as detailed in Part 1.

In production, Server Core may be employed as a deployment standard. Which does not provide the server graphical UI like Server Manager or MMC at all. There are times it is more productive or as a preference to operate with the server graphical UI. In such case, an administrator can enable or disable the server graphical UI, namely switch the installation options by enabling or disabling the above mentioned components.

The trick is to use the Add-WindowsCapability PowerShell cmdlet to call the feature that you need. You can get a list of available Feature on demand on Microsoft Doc or by using this PowerShell command :

At Microsoft Ignite, the company also announced the general availability of one of those key ingredients: Azure Boost, a system that makes storage and networking faster by taking those processes off the host servers onto purpose-built hardware and software.

Before 2016, most layers of the Microsoft cloud were bought off the shelf, said Pat Stemen, partner program manager on the AHSI team. Then Microsoft began to custom build its own servers and racks, driving down costs and giving customers a more consistent experience. Over time, silicon became the primary missing piece.

The silicon architecture unveiled today also lets Microsoft not only enhance cooling efficiency but optimize the use of its current datacenter assets and maximize server capacity within its existing footprint, the company said.

In the Standard Configuration for On Demand Migration for Active Directory the agent is deployed to each Device to be migrated. Those agents communicate outbound, over ports 80/443 (every 4 hours, when a job is available, or when initially registering) to the On Demand Migration for Active Directory webserver, located in Microsoft Azure. They also communicate outbound to the On Demand Migration for Active Directory, Device Agent Cache Service (DACS) in Azure over UDP on port 3030 every 2 minutes.

In the Web Proxy Configuration for On Demand Migration for Active Directory the agent is deployed to each Device as normal, but it will be configured to communicate through a designated web proxy and port. Those agents will communicate outbound through the defined proxy port to the On Demand Migration for Active Directory webserver in Azure over port 443 (HTTPS) every 4 hours, when a job is available, or when initially registering. They also communicate outbound through the defined proxy port to the On Demand Migration for Active Directory, Device Agent Cache Service (DACS) in Azure but on port 80, every 2 minutes.

On Demand Migration for Active Directory solves all your classic Active Directory migration requirements in an easy to set up SaaS platform. There are no servers or databases to install, no trust to establish up-front and no network connectivity between environments is required. With On Demand Migration for Active Directory you can expect the following features, plus much more.

Both Windows 10 and 11 come with optional features that need to be manually enabled by the user when required. However, often, an active internet connection is required so that Windows can download the respective files via Windows Update and enable the feature. But what do you do when you do not have an internet connection on the PC, or your machine is sitting behind a proxy server that restricts access to Microsoft servers?

However, if you wish to download the source files through Windows Update (active internet connection required), you will need to return to the same location inside Windows Registry as in step 3 above, and delete the registry value LocalSourcePath.Delete registry to resume downloading through Windows UpdateClosing WordsIn a corporate environment where hundreds of computers sit behind a proxy server, it is often found that Microsoft servers are blocked and WSUS is used to update Windows. In that case, you will need to use the SXS source files to install certain optional features. If you have to enable such features on more than one PC, it is recommended that you place the SXS folder on a shared network drive, map it to each PC, and then provide the path for the SXS folder where required.

Windows Server Core is a minimal installation option. Windows Server Core includes most but not all server roles. Server Core has a smaller disk footprint, and therefore a smaller attack surface due to a smaller code base

Windows Server 2022 includes updates to Storage Migration Service that allow customers to seamlessly migrate file servers from NetApp FAS to Windows Server. The new release also provides increased file server security and performance with SMB AES-256 encryption and SMB on-the-fly compression. Furthermore, this release packs in significant improvements to Windows container runtime such as cross-version compatibility and containerization tools for .NET, ASP.NET and IIS applications.

Server Core deployments are ideal for enterprises that need to deploy and maintain a large number of servers. Microsoft recommends Server Core for servers that require minimal administration once deployed for specific infrastructure roles, such as domain controllers and certificate authorities.

Windows Server 2022 Core Benefits:Reduced maintenance: Because the Server Core installation option installs only what is required to have a manageable server, less maintenance is required than a full Windows Server installation with a graphical interface.Reduced attack surface: Because Server Core installations are minimal, there are fewer applications running on the server, which decreases the attack surface.Reduced management: Because fewer applications and services are installed on a server running the Server Core installation, there is less to manage.Less disk space required: A Server Core installation requires only about 1 GB of disk space to install and approximately 2 GB for operations after the installation. Server comes with 30GB disk.

On-demand licenses for Microsoft software are new licenses that are provided byGoogle and that do not require an up-front investment nor a long-termcommitment. With on-demand licenses, you pay-as-you-go for the cost of thelicense only while the VM is running. Licenses for Microsoft software aretypically not eligible for discounts. For information about other software thatis not eligible for discounts, see Discount Exclusions.

If you have existing investments in perpetual Microsoft licenses that requirededicated hardware, you can bring these licenses toGoogle Cloud by usingCompute Engine's sole-tenant nodes. Sole-tenantnodes are physical Compute Engine servers that are fully dedicated foryour use. For information about which operating system image licenses you canbring to sole-tenant nodes, see OS details.

License Mobility through Software Assurance helps customers running Microsoftapplication servers transition to Google Cloud using perpetual or termsubscription licenses acquired through their Microsoft Volume Licensingagreements. Compute Engine lets you import Microsoft images, applyexisting application licenses to the imported images, and then deploy Microsoftserver applications on Google Cloud without paying additional licensingfees for those applications.
