Position Description and Duties: The Music, Theatre, and Dance Librarian is
the primary resource for users in the identification, location, use, and
interpretation of the Hamon's collections in music, theatre, and dance.
Provides basic reference service in the others arts as required. Provides
user education in music, theatre, and dance. Prepares paper and electronic
handouts and other guides in the use of the Library and its music, theatre,
and dance holdings. Responsible for the selection of music, theatre, and
dance materials in the Hamon Arts Library. Works closely with the faculty
and students in all the arts and provides detailed instruction in library
use for specific classes. Assists in the processing and interpretation of
the Hamon's special collection. Detailed duties and responsibilities of
this position are as follows:
1. Collection Development: Responsible for the selection of materials for
the disciplines of music, theatre, and dance in the Hamon Arts Library.
Reads reviews and other relevant materials in making recommendations for
purchases for the reference and circulating collections. Works closely with
the faculty from the disciplines in making selections. Works with the
Center for Information Processing (CIP) in placing orders in assigned
disciplines and monitoring related funds.
2. Reference Assistance: Assists users in the identification, location,
utilization, and interpretation of print and electronic resources, including
online catalog (Voyager), CD-ROM, networks, and online databases; interprets
library policies to users. Assists in the management of all new technology
in information services; maintains skills through reading, practice, and
continuing education.
3. User Education: Schedules, plans, and teaches classes in print and
electronic information resources, including the Internet, for music,
theatre, and dance classes; develops instructional materials and publicizes
the service; establishes and maintains contacts with faculty.
4. Bibliographic Control: Works in collaboration with the Center for
Information Processing (CIP) regarding representation of materials in the
online catalog. Develops and maintains understanding of basic cataloging
standards and database record structure (e.g., MARC formats).
5. Other: May supervise work of library assistants or student library
assistants. Serves on library and university committees, task forces, etc.,
as appropriate.
In addition to core management and service responsibilities, all Central
University Library staff participate in work teams which cross service
boundaries. All staff must be prepared to adapt to flexible organizational
patterns and changing work environments. Position duties and
responsibilities will change as the libraries respond to new priorities and
users' research needs. The libraries will adopt new directions and
information technology as appropriate, update policies and procedures as
necessary, and periodically reevaluate collections, access, services,
operations, and programs. Librarians are expected to develop a progressively
more substantive professional record.
Background: The Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library, a 46,000 square foot,
four floor facility houses the majority of SMU's collections in art, arts
administration, art history, cinema, dance, music, and theatre, including
100,000 cataloged books and scores, 27,000 audio and video recordings, and
over 260 current periodical subscriptions. It is located in the Meadows
School of the Arts building and contains an audio-visual center, computer
lab, exhibition space, a meeting room, group and individual studies, and a
secure, climate-controlled Special Collections area. The Hamon possesses a
wide variety of computer technology, including 60 public and staff computers
with Internet access, CD-ROM and other optical disc technology, and access
to OCLC, RLIN, and other bibliographic and information utilities. This is
one of four librarian and five support staff positions, and reports to the
Director of the Hamon Arts Library. SMU has the largest library system of
any private institution in the Southwest, and the Hamon is part of its
Central University Libraries.
The Meadows School of the Arts includes the Dance, Theatre, Art, Art
History, and Music divisions, as well as the divisions of Advertising,
Electronic Media & Film, Journalism, and Arts Administration and Corporate
Communication. The School serves an undergraduate and graduate population
of over 1100 people and offers several graduate degrees including Master of
Music (in Conducting, Sacred Music, Music History and Literature, Music
Education, Music Therapy, Performance, Theory and Composition), Master of
Arts (in TV/Radio and Art History), and Master of Fine Arts (in Art,
Choreographic Theory and Practice, Directing, Acting, and Design).
Qualifications:
Required: Master of Library Science (or the equivalent) from an
ALA-accredited program; Bachelor's degree in music, theatre, or dance;
familiarity with computer-based technology in libraries; good verbal and
written communication skills; ability to work effectively with faculty and
students.
Desired: Master's degree in music, theatre, or dance; knowledge of one or
more of the following languages: French, German, or Italian; one or more
years of work experience in an academic library (non-professional experience
acceptable) or archive.
