Today, there was a Macedonian protest in front of
the Queen's Park Parliament building in Toronto today.
The protest was sponsored by the United Macedonians and
managed to pull together only 1000 nashi at a maximum.

This is an annual event which coincides with the Greek
Independence Day Parade on Danforth Ave. While they are
revelling in their "freedom" from the Ottomans, the Macedonian
community uses this day to bring to the governments attention
and to the media more importantly that Macedonia is still
oppressed in its southern territory, Aegean Macedonia.

While the TV reports on the greek parade, all stations then
counter with a report of our protest right after it. Great
media grabbing opportunity to bring attention to all the
problems the "democratic" greeks bring to the Macedonians of
northern greece, especially the blatant human right violations.

Anyway, the protest today was small but did its job.
Any other MAKEDON members from Toronto want to comment on the
protest today? Please do.

Stevce

Yeah, Id like to comment on it...

If anyone on this list was involved in organizing the protest, I ask you
three questions.

1) Why was the majority of the dialouge in Macedonian? The media does
not understand what you are saying, and it will not reach the masses if
it is not in english! At least the begining should have been in english
and the second half in Macedonian OR an english rendition directly after
a Macedonian speaker.

2) I dont mean to be an asshole, but, I think that the letters to the UN
and EU and our Prime Minister (not president, as was stated) would have
been far more comprehendable if they were memorized by someone who has
good english diction. Not simply read off a sheet as if it were the
first time they were reading it. (It was very monotone and difficult to
follow, everyone lost interest and started talking in the crowd!)

3) Why were none of the university student groups contacted?????????
They would have added to the numbers AND would have gladly done the
english dialouge with more enthusiasim and passion.

Yes, it could have been much better.... but what the heck, I was there
in full support eventhough I have an exam tomorrow (which is more than I can
say for others who live in Toronto) and we got our media time! Hehehehe :)

I agree!

True! Almost every letter read sounded the exact same. Very boring.
Everyone lost interest and did start talking almost over the speakers voice.

True! This is very important. We alone could have doubled or tripled the
attendence. I wish it was much better organized.

CFTO did not include our "protest". But all the other stations did, so I
guess it did make an impact, but I didn't see the news to see how many people
they say attended. Again, this was the worst protest we've done in awhile,
but then again it did its job. We just could have made a larger impact using
the human rights violations and name change issue as a heavy marker to gain
more media coverage.

Hey Steve, My dad made it on the CBC Toronto broadcast, when he saw it he
started jumping up and down saying thats me. CBC did not even mention the
Greek celebration on the 11:00 pm news, no photos, nada. The coverage and
commentary for Macedonian was excellent, they explained our position well.
I wonder if you collect any articles the Makedonija newspaper from Toronto or
any other sources of Macedonian literture, I want to start posting the
articles on this newsgroup and alt.news.macedonia, there are so many positive
studies and articles from reputable sources out there about Macedonia, we
should start fanning our peacock feathers.
Love the map, I hope you get as many Macedonian students from U of T
and other Universities in Toronto to participate in this newsgroup for matters
of support and small talk.
