it seems that many people consider personal emails pursued regularly
[e.g. 2 hours per day] as tending to increase the isolation of the person
from real human contact, and increasing the ultimate loneliness of that
individual.
others consider such reach out and contact to be a step in the other
direction, that email intimacy can be more fulfilling than hum-drum
physically-present relationships, and thus connect the individual with other
people perhaps better than other means, and increase the intimacy with other
people.
haven't seen much serious discussion on this, but would appreciate
being directed to recent, thoughtful articles on same topic.

Check out the New Jersey Journal of Communication, Spring 1996. There's
an article there that addresses the isolation/unification question.
