Since we would like to have a self check system eventually and have
a 3M security system (tattle tapes), we are placing them in the position
recommended by 3M.
Quote: "Generally, the edge of the barcode label should be positioned
about 1.25 (32mm) from the bottom edged or top edge of the book. The
barcode location should be consistent as possible and should not vary
more than +/- 1/2"(13 mm). We suggest the left edge of the label begin
about 1.5"(38mm) from the spine of the book. However, the label may be
placed anywhere from the book spine, to 7" (180mm) out from the book
spine in the horizontal plane. We suggest that the barcode be placed on
the front cover."
We chose a similar position on the back for books that could not be
barcoded on the front for various reasons, but so far have used this
position infrequently.
We made templates to help us position barcodes correctly.
We place the barcode on the outside upper left corner of the books.
Reasons:
1. Book does not have be opened during checkout or checkin, no
matter what kind of equipment used to scan the barcode.
2. Automated inventory can take place without removing the book
from the shelf. Just tip the top of the book out and scan the
barcode.
We have had this placement for many years and it has worked out well for us.
