This is the first that I have heard about a new release of TCP/IPfor
MVS. Is this available now or still being developed? If it is
available has anyone installed it?

TCPIP for MVS (3.1) will be available 3rd quarter. You might want to
call your IBM SE for details. This is a major release with lots of
enhancements. The biggest, as far as I am concerned, is their Print Plus
feature. This will allow IMS and CICS application programs to send
their output to printers in an IP network. You won't have to buy the
VPS TCP/IP interface from Levi Ray and Shoup. Briefly, some of the
improvements:
1) Improved all their sockets interface, including a new one for IMS.
2) NETSTAT has been greatly enhanced, better filtering.
3) VMCF will now be restartable without an IPL.
4) FTP has been rewritten in C and is many times faster.
5) Telnet now supports MSG10.
6) Hardcoded dataset names elimated.
7) Rewriting all manuals.

Hope this information helps.

Does anyone know yet whether or not the new version of MVS TCP/IP
is ESA only? We're an XA shop (still) and it would be nice to have
some of those new features.

The 3.1 release of TCP/IP for MVS is in beta now. Last I heard GA is
expected to be 3Q94. There are many new features and some badly needed
enhancements. Get with your IBM rep and see if you can get a breakdown.

I had hoped that the use of the VMCF address space would be dropped
in the next Version of IBM MVS TCP/IP. The continued use of the "PLATFORM"
to emulate "VM" inside of a MVS operating system is a very sore point.
Money and compute cycles will still "Go Down the Drain" trying to emulate
a "VM" inter address communation method on MVS. I still hope that the
continue use of the "PLATFORM" by IBM MVS TCP/IP is incorrect. For
years I have wanted a real MVS TCP/IP, rather than VM TCP/IP running under
software emulation on MVS.

As a VMer who for years has suffered with atrocious ports of MVS applic-
ations, I feel your pain...;-)

Yeah, like PSF, for starters, not to mention the whole GCS kludge...

Netview (and RTM monitor date records therein) get my vote as worst
port. It's a tough call though. There have been so many. I think Rusty
isn't going to get much sympathy from any VM'er who has had to
suffer through this issue for all these years. It would feel like
justice if IBM hadn't started releasing all the good stuff on MVS first.
(recent announcements here about upcoming VM TCP features not withstanding....)

I heard from Levi Ray and Shoup that Print Plus was limited to 8 network
printers. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Mike.
