Recovering from Z/OS Tcp/Ip send or receive timeouts

Hi
i have a z/os tcp/ip application and was wondering how do you recover when tcp/ip completes a send or receive request with an error 54 or some indication of a timeout.
Can i just retry the failing read or write?
