Hi folks,

I am trying to get to the bottom of the Communications Storage Manager
(CSM - z/OS 1.9) parameter FIXED. I understand the ECSA parameter,
because I know where and how big our ECSA is.

But what I don't have a clear understanding about, is the FIXED parameter.

1. Is the FIXED parameter referring to how many ECSA pages are FIXED

2. CSM uses 2 dataspaces, 1 for 31 bit storage, 1 for 64 bit storage. Is the
FIXED parameter somehow related to this dataspace storage?

3. Or is FIXED used for some other purpose?

None the documentation explicitly defines which storage is related to FIXED.

Hope someone can help me.

Thanks

We are planning to do a assessment that requires installation of this
FMID JBB772S so that from the SMF Records we can find out how much of
our current general processor workload can be processed by specialty
processors like zIIP and zAAP.

We have found out that FMID JBB772S requires to enable that but most of
PTFs associated with FMID JBB772S are not received due to NO APPLICABLE
++VER statement while run a Receive job.

UA23218 NOT RECEIVED PTF NO APPLICABLE ++VER

NOT ASSIGNED PUT0601 SYSMOD NOT IN
RECEIVE STATUS

We are running Z/OS V1.7 and please let me know how can we receive all
these PTFs.

Have you received the function yet? If you haven't that would explain
why the associated PTF's won't be received.

Have you REC/APP/ACC the Function JBB772S yet? If not, that is the first step in getting the PTFs for it on.

This PTF is for FMID HBB7709. On our system, that is superceded by HBB7740.
I don't know about the rest of your system levels, but if the PTFs are for
related FMIDs of multiple releases, then SMPE should receive only the ones
that are applicable to your system.

You need to receive the FMIDs for the version of software you are running.

If you have HBB7730 you do not do HBB7740, HBB7750; unless you are running all those different releases of z/OS.

I would just receive the JBB772S and see if it goes in.

What version of z/OS will this be for???

Go look at Cheryl Watson's Hot Flashes
http://www.watsonwalker.com/PR070216.pdf

It will help you with this process.

Then you should be able to REC/APP/ACC JBB772S.

The easiest way is to look up the PSP bucket for your level of z/OS and look for zIIP in the text

You first have to install FMID JBB772S.

I suggest you review these two pages:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg1_ZOSV1R7_BCPZIIP

http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/downloads/
and use the 'IBM zIIP Support for z/OS V1R6-V1R7 and z/OS.e V1R6-V1R7' link... there is a program directory here too.

The same way you do a RECEIVE on anything else. Look up the RECEIVE command in the SMP/E manual. This question makes me seriously question your depth of understanding on how to do SMP/E work. No offense meant! But if one of the others here asked me this, I would NOT let him do the work at all. Perhaps some education is in order? Ignorance is not shameful. We are all ignorant in some areas. Right now, I'm having hell with Tomcat due to my lack of training and experience.

If I recall correctly ;-) write the following in smpin while smpptfin points
to the file holds the function:
set bdy(global).
receive sysmods.
set bdy (tgtzone) /* what ever you call your target zone */.
Apply check s(JBB772S) GEXT /* to include IFREQs etc. */.

The best way for those who are not familiar with SMP is to use the dialog.

If you have access to the SMPE ISPF function, then you could let the SMP/E Panels help you build a job to do the REC/APP/ACC process for this FMID.

> None (of) the documentation explicitly defines which storage is related to
FIXED.

The following is a list of the sources of information on the Communications
Storage Manager (CSM) and particularly the IVTPRM00 member:

- MVS Initialization and Tuning Reference
Chapter 63. IVTPRM00 (Communication Storage Manager)

- z/OS Communications Server SNA Network Implementation Guide
Chapter 14. Application programs
Communications storage manager (CSM)

Appendix C. Communications storage manager

- z/OS Communications Server New Function Summary
Chapter 1. Planning to use new functions
Defining SNA data sets
Parmlib member for Communication Storage Manager (CSM)

- z/OS Communications Server CSM Guide
mainly for the CSM API

Additional information is integrated into SNA Operation, SNA Messages, SNA
Diagnosis Vol 1, Techniques and Procedures and even SNA Customization.

Probably for information on how to set up, monitor and *alter* CSM storage
for the purposes of optimizing performance you need Appendix C of the SNA
Network Implementation Guide - 3 1/2 pages. The section in the New Function
Summary manual is the most extensive description of IVTPRM00 (2 pages). In
comparison what is said in the MVS Initialization and Tuning Reference chapter
is pretty useless. I believe the chapter is there for form's sake only!

You can probably see that the CSM is a semi-independent component of
VTAM supplied in order to support improved performance for moving chunks of
data within the Central Electronic Complex (CEC). It has particular uses for
some CS SNA and IP functions but - having an external API - I guess anyone
might care to use it. IVTPRM00 seems to provide parameters to guide the CSM.

It's interesting that there is a statement in the CSM Guide which says using
applications should provide guidance over how to set the parameters. I expect
that Appendix C is that guidance from the CS SNA and IP components.

From the end of section "Application responsibilities for using CSM" in Chapter
1:

<quote>

The applications use of CSM should be documented so that the installation
can adjust ECSA and fixed storage limits in the CSM parmlib member as
necessary. This information should be available in application installation
documentation so that necessary changes to the limits can be made prior to
application installation.

</quote>

Incidentally, your precise question may be answered by the following sentence
from the New Function Summary section:

<quote>

Note that the fixed maximum represents the total fixed storage above and
below the 2-gigabyte bar.

</quote>

Also the so-called "IBM Health Checker for z/OS" can have opinions over your
IVTPRM00 choices. Just have the salt cellar handy!

Although I often have a shot at any VTAM-related questions which arise, CSM
is a bit obscure and I can't tell you any more than can be found in the fine
manuals.

One little insight which may or may or may not be useful is that the way the
CSM handles its buffer pools has the "look and feel" of the way - which I used
to teach - that VTAM has always handled its traditional buffer pools - so no
surprises there then!
