Is it possible to provide a link directly to a posting on the IBM-Main List
or do I need to point someone to the archive?

For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions,
send email to list...@bama.ua.edu with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO
Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

Used to be. With the new security regime, User and/or cookie information
appears in URLs. I don't know whether it's possible to launder off
such stuff and leave a URL that works, at least for a logged-in
user. It should be a design objective that it not work for an
unregistered user.

It would be a courtesy of LISTSERV if each posting appeared with a
"Sharable link to this page" button which could be copied.

Maybe Darren has a suggestion.

What have you tried? I opened the archives, hit Oct. then sort in
most recent first and got back to your post.

Can you see it? Maybe, maybe not depending on LAN settings.

Archives is safest, also on google user groups formerly usenet, formerly
bibnet.

You could point to the Google Groups archive of the newsgroup relay:
http://groups.google.com/group/bit.listserv.ibm-main/browse_thread/thread/45297c7175a4dbb6/46376427e02c7168#46376427e02c7168

By experiment, the following bowdlerized URL appears to work directly
for a logged-in user, and enters a login dialogue for other users.

http://bama.ua.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0610&L=ibm-main&P=2017

Please try to use a mailer that doesn't insert line breaks in URLs.
The archive server can't deal with those, even if they are protected
as recommended by RFC 1738:

<URL: http://bama.ua.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=
ind0610&L=ibm-main&P=2017 >

Thanks...the link to the google group worked great and without a login
requirement.

NO! Google is google and Usenet is Usenet. Usenet is not part of
google can not be changed or renamed by google, although google may
have some poorly designed screens that lead you to believe otherwise.
The Google archive of Usenet is not Usenet and the google groups web
pages are not Usenet.

Does the LISTSERV->Usenet gateway preserve Message-ID?
