Um, I'm pretty sure that native z/os FTP supports both compression and checkpoint/restart. Of course, this is z/os to z/os. Other platforms vary widely on their interoperability and features. Oddly enough, many of these other platform products use Windows strategies rather than the RFC's.
Native z/os FTP under a suitable job scheduler is a pretty powerful combination for a pretty reasonable price: $0.00.
File transfer tools have a strong standing in the industry simply because there was no FTP and data had to be moved. And we all know about solutions that outlive the problems they once solved.
