_ Jay Miner Recovering
/ \ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
/ - \ *StarShip* News Network
/ ___ \
(_/ \_) casual telephone interview this week with Jay Miner revealed that
kidney problems continue to plague the father of our favorite computer,
although his health is reportedly on the upswing. Jay sounded tired, but says
he feels well enough to continue his full time job, and remarked that because
kidney dialysis requires four hours every day, he hasn't had time recently to
groom the hard drive controlling the popular BBS he runs from his home in
northern California on an Amiga 2000.
Jay doesn't travel much any more, but says he would like to go to the World of
Commodore/Amiga show scheduled this fall in Pasadena, California. We hope he
feels up to attending because the *StarShip* will be there and it's great to
see his hearty smile.
Hope you're feeling 100% soon, Jay. Hugs from the *StarShip* Crew!

______ PP&S Ships Zeus HD Controller/68040 Accelerator
(__ __) Releases Upgrades to BaudBandit & DiskMaster II
/ / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
/ /
(_/hings are hopping at Progressive Peripherals & Software this summer!
Now shipping is the 28 MHz Zeus SCSI-2 Hard Drive Controller with 68040
Accelerator and 64MB Expansion for the Amiga 2000, with the 33MHz version
to be released on July 15th.
Zeus combines the processing power of the Motorola 68040 with state-of-the-
art SCSI-2 hard drive technology. Zeus offers an asynchronous 28 MHz or
33Mhz 68040 processor, for processing power of over 30 million instructions
per second (MIPS) -- up to 6 times the speed of a 26MHz Amiga 3000.
When equipped with a SCSI-2 hard drive, Zeus's high speed SCSI-2 controller
will transfer data at rates up to tem megabytes per second. In practical
terms, this is up to eight times the speed of standard Amiga SCSI controllers.
Zeus is fully compatible with current SCSI hard drives, and offers rigid disk
block support so existing 3-1/2" half-height or smaller drives can be mounted
easily, directly on the Zeus board. (Data transfer rates are about one
megabyte per second for SCSI-1 type hard drives.)
For expanding system memory, Zeus has 32-bit RAM capacity of up to 64
megabytes. 32-bit RAM may be installed easily using standrad 1MBx8 and/or
4MBx8 SIMM modules for configurations of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40,
48, 52 and 64 megabytes. Zeus was designed to accept page, static column, and
nibble mode SIMM modules. The 40ns SIMMs are recommended for use solely with
the 33MHz 68040 processor.
An Amiga 2000/Zeus system offers a high degree of performance, power, and
reliability at at price far below that of slower SPARC or RISC based
workstations. Zeus brings about a new era of computing potential to the Amiga
2000 market. For desktop video power, 3-D modeling, CAD and desktop publishing
in time-intensive environments, Zeus is the most comprehensive professional
solution.
Progressive's engineering staff noted that Zeus's single-card design is
unique. Zeus's 8-layer, double-sided surface mount design saves valuable A2000
expansion space, offering more technology on a single card than many high-end
hardware products on other computer platforms.
Zeus is compatible with NTSC and PAL systems, AmigaDOS 1.3, 2.0, the Video
Toaster, Imagine, 3-D Professional, desktop publishing software and many other
software and hardware products. Zeus was designed for upgradability to the
Motorola 68040 33MHz processor.
Available now, suggested retail price for Zeus (28 MHz) is $2,895.00. Upgrade
cost from the 2000/040 is $900.00 (US).
BaudBandit V2.0
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now shipping, BaudBandit V2.0 jumped from v1.52 and now sports a cleaner
Workbench 2.0 look. PP&S has expanded its ARexx support, added more protocols
(Auto-Zmodem, Kermit, CIS-B Plus), added a remote function (ala Procomm on the
PC), automatic file decompression to a predetermined directory, half-height
interlaced screen (like on DiskMaster 2), and true IBM ANSI suport (8 colours,
but 16 are mapped through quite well). Upgrade cost with original BaudBandit
disk is only $15.00 (US). Not bad, eh?
DiskMaster II V2.03
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exciting NEW features make this super-popular directory utility program even
better! Besides upgrading printer support and replacing the long lost Print
Dir command, DiskMaster II now offers new public screen host support, AutoKey
commands, "Sort By" function and AutoModPlayer (for Tracker modules). Upgrade
cost is $10 (US) from any version of DiskMaster II, $25 (US) from any version
of DiskMaster prior to II.
Progressive Peripherals & Software has been developing and manufacturing
Amiga software and hardware peripherals since 1986. Recent product releases
include PP&S's highly acclaimed line of 68040 accelerators for the Amiga
2000 and 3000, the ProRAM 3000 64MB A3000 RAM expansion, and the Rambrandt
Video/Graphics system. Upcoming products include 3-D Professional Release
2, and QicTape tape backup system for the Amiga 500/1000/2000/3000. Contact
them at 464 Kalamath Street, Denver, CO 80204-4144.
Note: The *StarShip* 5-MINUTE News Network will have details on PP&S's two
68040 Accelerators for the Amiga 500 (the Progressive 040/500 and 040/500i)
next week. These products are set for August release and PP&S asks that
calls inquiring about price availability be kept to a minimum so they can
concentrate on getting them finished in time rather than spend that time
talking. :-)
