DEMONSTRATION IN WASHINGTON:
1) Time and place
2) Transportation
3 TV, Radio and Local Papers
4 Announcement of the Demonstration
5) Speakers
6) E-Mail addresses of NGOs and Media
1) Time and Place
On both Saturday and Sunday, the NGO COALITION will start its demonstration
at 11AM in front of the Romanian Embassy (1607 23rd St, NW) on Sheridan
Circle, which is at the crossing of Massachusetts Avenue and 23rd Street in
Washington. Those who are coming by car, car-pool or bus, should come
directly to Sheridan Circle and park their vehicles there. Please be on time,
because the demonstration might not be "stationary", as its leaders might
decide to march to the Australian Embassy or to USA government offices.
2) Transportation
People who are coming by car and have empty seats in their cars, are asked to
stop at the Hungarian House of their towns to pick up people who have no
transportation. In New York City, the cars will leave as soon as they are
filled. Please be there (213 East 82nd Street) at 5AM on Saturday, the 1st of
April. The chief organizer in New York City is Gabriella Taylor. If you have
any questions or if you want to give her any advance information on the
number of empty seats in your car, van, bus, etc., please contact her at:
(Healt...@aol.com) or phone her at: 516-797-1967.
Other car-pools, vans and buses will hopefully leave from other Hungarian
Houses, Churches and Scout buildings in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania and Maryland. We understand that people are planning to also
attend even from Cleveland, Florida,Toronto and Boston. Please advise the
chief organizers about the plans in your own city (you can reach Robert Imreh
at rim...@earthlink.net or Arpad Fabian-Kovacs at save-ou...@duna.org)
and as soon as your information is received, they will post it on our
web-page at: http://www.duna.org/cyanidespill/ This is VERY IMPORTANT that
this be posted, because many of our supporters are student members of various
NGOs (Greenpeace, Human Rights Advocates, International Rivers Network,
Natural Heritage Institute, Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, World Wide Fund
for Nature) and do not have transportation.
It is our understanding, which is not yet confirmed yet that (in Cleveland
Mr. Kossanyi, in Pennsylvania Mr.Juhasz, in Baltimore Dr. Kopits, in New
Jersey the church and MVSZ leaders, in Connecticut Reverend Poznan and
throughout the region the various Scout groups) have started organizing and
their specific plans when finalized will be posted on our web-page.
People who are coming by train are planning to take the daily #79 (The
Carolinian), which leaves from New York's Penn Station at 6:05 AM and arrives
at Union Station in Washington at 9:50 AM. The younger members of this group
plan to walk from the station to the Romanian Embassy. They will use the
sidewalks (CNN and Cspan asked us to walk with our fish hanging from our
broomsticks and with our spray painted, home made signs and white face masks,
so they will have something to film), while for the older folks (over 80)
there is the subway. (Plastic fish can be obtained in any toy store and face
masks from any paint store, although we also asked some medical doctor
friends to bring some.)
3) TV, Radio and Local Papers
Please do think of yourself NOT as a participant, BUT AS AN ORGANIZER of this
demonstration. We would like to make this the largest environmental
demonstration in Washington and it will only happen, if we all take part in
organizing it. Please do distribute the announcement of our demonstration (in
paragraph 4 below), please paste it onto the bulletin boards of your club,
workplace, school and please also send it as a letter to your local paper for
publication. We must emphasize, that this is not just a Hungarian effort and
not even just an effort to bring attention to the Tisza/Danube spills, but an
international effort to protects all our rivers and water supplies.
In New York City the three Hungarian TV and two Hungarian radio stations will
start making announcements about this demonstration this coming weekend. On
Saturday on the WNYE cable channel (also visible in Connecticut as #60),
Charles Bardosh will report on it at 4 PM. With information concerning any
last minute developments he can be reached at: 718-275-1223). On Sunday, the
two Hungarian radio programs can be heard between 12 AM and 2 PM on 103.6 FM.
Mr. Geza Ziegler will broadcast a full report and he too can be given last
minute information: 203-322-7456 or Mr. Gyula Apatini at:212-570-6441.
Please do make similar arrangements in your own city or town .
4) Announcement of the Demonstration
Please find below an announcement, which you can hand out to any potential
participant or can mail (or E-mail) to your local newspaper. The E-mail
addresses of national and international media are given in paragraph 6) below:
Major Environmental Demonstration in Washington
(April 1 and 2, 2000)
Three times within a period of seven weeks, Central Europe has suffered
environmental disasters of the greatest magnitude. Both originated in Romania.
On January 30, 2000, a cyanide spill from a Romanian mining operation
inflicted environmental damage comparable only to the massive release of
radiation that followed a fire and explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power
plant in the Ukraine. The cyanide and metal byproducts escaping from the
Aurul gold mine in Romania found their way into a tributary of the Tisza, the
second largest river of Hungary. The Tisza carried the toxic material into
the Danube winding its way through Vojvodina in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria
into the Black Sea. The cyanide killed all life in the Tisza and caused
untold environmental and economic damage in the lower Danube basin.
Less than six weeks later, on March 10, 2000, heavy rain and melting snow
burst a dam at the Baia Borsa lead and zinc mine in Northern Romania, 115
miles from the Hungarian border. Some 20,000 tons of heavy metal sludge were
released into a tributary of the Viso river, which then carried it, once
again, into the Tisza. The river, once called the "Blonde Tisza" because of
its beautiful sandy color, has turned black. According to Romanian
authorities, the lead concentration of the river is twice above permissible
levels, the zinc concentration nine times. The heavy metal spill has
completed the destruction of the upper part of the Tisza, begun by the
cyanide spill. Moreover, in Romania alone, the disaster may cost some 2,400
workers their jobs.
Four days later, on March 14, another heavy metal spill occurred at Baia
Borsa. Romania reportedly failed to notify Hungary of this latest incident.
The warning came from the Ukrainian authorities. Romanian press reports quote
European Union environmental spokesmen who warn that release of more toxic
pollutants can be expected.
An environmental disaster knows no borders. Clouds of dust generated by a
massive volcanic outbreak in the Philippines or in Mexico may filter out
sunshine halfway around the world. That cannot be prevented. But these two
catastrophic events in Romania did not need to happen. They occurred as the
direct result of the Romanian government's cavalier attitude about
environmental issues. Romania, as well as other countries that fail to act
immediately to forestall disasters, which could be prevented, must be
compelled by the world community to do so. The existing body of international
law, including environmental treaties must be enforced without delay and
strengthened where necessary.
We invite all organizations and individuals who care about the preservation
of our environment to show their support and join us at a demonstration in
front of the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC
On both the 1st and the 2nd of April we will meet at 10 AM on DuPont Circle.
(We will pick up live fish in the supermarket or plastic ones in the toy
store) and with the fish and our home made signs we will walk on
Massachussetts Avenue to the Romanian Embassy (1607 23rd Street). We extend a
special invitation to all Americans whose roots are in the region directly
affected by the two recent disaster -- Romania, Transylvania, Hungary,
Yugoslavia, Vojvodina, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, as well as the European
Union.
We all share the same environment, let us take a stand to save it!
