CALGARY - Nisha Gill believed she was looking at her two-year-old daughter for the last time during 15 seconds of terror Thursday morning as Air Canada Flight 190 plunged through the skies.
"I was scared because my daughter was with me. My husband was telling me not to go. She wasn't supposed to go with me," said Gill, tears streaming down her face. "We were just praying it should land properly."
Gill, 30, was on her way to visit a sister in Toronto and had only booked her daughter's ticket the night before.
The two were among 88 people on a Victoria-Toronto flight that began normally but was suddenly transformed into a terrifying white-knuckle roller-coaster ride. Shaken passengers spoke of how the jet plunged thousands of metres and then rolled sharply to the left and right - violently pitching people, dishes and drink carts about the cabin.
"I can't describe the screaming. No movie does it justice. There was a lot of screaming - a lot of crying," recalled Jayne Harvey, 45, a nurse from Keswick, Ont.
Ambulances encircled the plane after it made an emergency landing at Calgary International Airport shortly after 8 a.m. and paramedics whisked a number of people off the aircraft on stretchers. Ten, including two crew members, were treated at city hospitals for a range of relatively minor injuries.
Nine were out of hospital by Thursday afternoon, and the 10th person was released Thursday night.
"The people who weren't belted in were the ones that got injured the most and those who had other people flying into them," said Harvey, who helped tend to the injured.
"I thought it was over for me. I will admit I was saying my prayers because I really thought I was about to die. I said, 'Just take care of my family."'
Some passengers had gripped their armrests so tightly they were bent 60 degrees.
What caused the aircraft to plunge so suddenly was unknown. Canada's Transportation Safety Board was investigating but said it was too soon to determine whether the "control problems" were caused by turbulence, mechanical problems or a mistake by the flight crew.
Harvey said it was a "miracle" that the pilots were able to regain control of the Airbus 319.
"They came on the intercom and explained they were flying manually and that the computer had been knocked out. And I don't know if it was knocked out before, and that caused the lurch, or it was knocked out after, because of the plane lurching back and forth."
Andrew Evans, on his way to Washington, D.C., from Victoria, was seated at the front of the plane.
"All of a sudden there were three big drops," said the 46-year-old.
"One major drop and then two more that went 'Oomph! Oomph!' And the plane rolled a bit after that. I was in the very, very front seat of the plane and was watching dishes fly through the air.
"There was a crash. The cart tipped over and there was a lot of squealing."
"It was over and done with in 10 or 15 seconds."
Both Air Canada and passengers praised the actions of the crew.
"The flight attendants were amazing, because a lot of them were injured themselves so they had cuts and were trying to dab blood out of their eyes," said Harvey.
Rick McNeil, who arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport several hours later on a different flight, said "the pilot probably saved our lives."
"The crew acted very responsibly. I have the utmost respect for them," said McNeil. "I'm not an airline pilot, but the aircraft lost control."
Tears running down his face and a fistful of red roses clutched in his hand, Geoff Norris of Toronto waited anxiously for his wife Anne to arrive at Pearson on Thursday night.
He said his wife told him on the phone earlier from Calgary she was bruised, but not too badly, "but psychologically, very badly," after the harrowing flight.
Norris said his wife told him "the plane started to wiggle or waggle left or right, and then it went into a dive, and people were screaming . . . And when they pulled out of this dive and stabilized the plane I gather that the captain or someone on the P.A. apologized or made some announcement. And they attributed it to a computer failure or malfunction."
He said his wife had been in Victoria to look after her elderly mother who needed some care. He said he and his wife would have a celebratory dinner with their daughter Thursday night after his wife's ordeal.
Anne Norris, who was wearing her seatbelt and had a window seat, said after she arrived at Pearson that she has a "bump" but is "fine." She said she thinks the whole terrifying ordeal lasted about a minute and a half.
"You could see the wings, and they were going like this (motions with her arms). And then you would drop in between each rotation. At one point, people thought it was going to turn right over, but it didn't, fortunately," said Norris. "That was the scariest bit when people thought it was going to turn over.
Norris, who said she has been a nurse for "a long time," had nothing but praise for the crew.
"A lot of people were hurt. The crew were fantastic. Some of the crew were injured quite badly. Everybody behaved really well. Little kids were more upset than anybody. And actually the whole experience was horrible," she said.
"We thought we were going to go down. I think there's no doubt about that. And we were all thrown about," she said.
"But you know, we got here safely in the end. And I have to say Air Canada did a great job in getting us out of there and getting the medics there, getting people off in stretchers and the ambulances - they were wonderful," said Norris.
Norris said she saw the flight attendants who were bringing the coffee along the aisle were thrown about as was a man in the washroom.
Sixteen-year-old Elise Fullerton of Mississauga, Ont., said she first heard the news when she was in class and got a text message at 10:30 a.m. ET from her boyfriend, 19-year-old Stefan Linge of Vancouver, who was moving to Ontario to live with her.
"I was in class. He texted me that he almost died," said Fullerton. She said she then called him.
"He said that his plane had almost crashed and that he was in Calgary . . . He said he was OK," said Fullerton.
She said he was "sort of" freaked out but "he's a guy, you know." She said he told her "kinda cool I almost died" - but that his DVD player was OK.
Fullerton said Linge told her it was like a movie, with everyone screaming and the plane shook, then began moving like a see-saw before the nose dived.
Fullerton and Linge embraced after he arrived at Pearson. He said he just wanted to get home.
Rob Reid, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Air Canada, said the company was focusing on caring for the injured passengers and those "for whom this has been a very stressful experience."
"Safety is our first priority at Air Canada and so any incident involving the safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost concern," Reid said in a statement from Montreal.
"We are very proud of the Air Canada flight crew of AC190 and our employees on the ground in Calgary for their professional response to this incident. We also commend the various agencies in Calgary who responded to this incident quickly and professionally. Their actions in helping us take care of our passengers is deeply appreciated."
Capt. Andy Wilson, president of the Air Canada Pilots Association, described the airline's pilots as some of "the best trained in the world" and said his organization was co-operating with the investigation.
"We are constantly subject to training, licensing and testing," he said. "We want the TSB to do their work and we should quell all speculation until we learn the causes of the incident."
Dr. Rob Abernethy, associate chief medical officer for the Calgary Health Region, said none of the injuries was life-threatening.
"These are mostly muscular-skeletal injuries that one would normally see if somebody was bounced around, having falls and that type of thing."
FlightAware, a U.S.-based company that tracks commercial air traffic, reported the plane appeared to hit rough air at 7:50 a.m. and changed altitude numerous times, perhaps to find a smoother route before descending into Calgary.
"The flight was in a climb and cruised briefly at 35,000 feet and then at 36,000 feet and then descended down to 31,000 feet," said Daniel Baker, CEO of FlightAware.
"It attempted to cruise at a variety of different altitudes. My speculation on that is that they were just trying to find smoother air."
He said the company's radar track of the flight showed it flew northeast after taking off from Victoria before turning south and cruising east just below the Canada-U.S. border. The aircraft then turned north into Canadian airspace over the Kootenay Mountains as it headed toward Calgary.
NavCanada declined to comment on weather conditions along the route, although the agency's website indicated there were no aviation weather bulletins in effect at the time.
Environment Canada reported a low-pressure system with a front moving east across British Columbia on Thursday morning - conditions that one meteorologist called a typical storm.
The rough flight was the second in Canada in recent months.
In September, nine people were hurt and three sent to hospital after a Halifax-bound WestJet flight hit turbulence with little warning. Passengers in that incident described people who were standing up or not buckled in being tossed about and lifted out of their seats. While they said it felt like the plane fell several hundred metres, the airline said data indicated the altitude drop was about 20 metres.
Transport Canada said it appeared the flight crew followed proper procedure in the Halifax case.

No one can predict CAT, and the only thing to do when encountering it is to ride it out. I see some people are under the impression that this was mountain effect waveforms. The sudden lurching around discounts that theory. Mountain waves are actually quite a hoot if you're flying visually. They kinds suck when on instruments. One other thing, MWF turbulance occurs beyond the mountains, and this happened south of Grandforks BC in the rockies.

Turbulance alone, no matter how severe, would not cause a plane to suddenly drop thousands of meters. More likely it is something wrong with the plane; Airbus has had quite a few problems lately. Seeubg as how Airbus is a huge European company with lots of important political connections, the true cause of the incident will either never be discovered or if it is it we will hever hear about it.

My husband was telling me not to go. She wasn't supposed to go with me," said Gill, tears streaming down her face. "We were just praying it should land properly." </div> <div>
Gill, 30, was on her way to visit a sister in Toronto and had only booked her daughter's ticket the night before. </div> <div>The two were among 88 people on a Victoria-Toronto flight that began normally but was suddenly transformed into a terrifying white-knuckle roller-coaster ride. Shaken passengers spoke of how the jet plunged thousands of metres and then rolled sharply to the left and right - violently pitching people, dishes and drink carts about the cabin. </div> <div>"I can't describe the screaming. No movie does it justice. There was a lot of screaming - a lot of crying," recalled Jayne Harvey, 45, a nurse from Keswick, Ont. </div> <div>Ambulances encircled the plane after it made an emergency landing at Calgary International Airport shortly after 8 a.m. and paramedics whisked a number of people off the aircraft on stretchers. Ten, including two crew members, were treated at city hospitals for a range of relatively minor injuries. </div> <div> Nine were out of
hospital by Thursday afternoon, and the 10th person was released Thursday night. </div> <div>"The people who weren't belted in were the ones that got injured the most and those who had other people flying into them," said Harvey, who helped tend to the injured. </div> <div>"I thought it was over for me. I will admit I was saying my prayers because I really thought I was about to die. I said, 'Just take care of my family."' </div> <div> Some passengers had gripped their armrests so tightly they were bent 60 degrees. </div> <div>What caused the aircraft to plunge so suddenly was unknown. Canada's Transportation Safety Board was investigating but said it was too soon to determine whether the "control problems" were caused by turbulence, mechanical problems or a mistake by the flight crew. </div> <div> Harvey said it was a "miracle" that the pilots were able to regain control of the Airbus 319. </div> <div>"They came on the intercom and explained they were flying
manually and that the computer had been knocked out. And I don't know if it was knocked out before, and that caused the lurch, or it was knocked out after, because of the plane lurching back and forth." </div> <div> Andrew Evans, on his way to Washington, D.C., from Victoria, was seated at the front of the plane. </div> <div> "All of a sudden there were three big drops," said the 46-year-old. </div> <div>"One major drop and then two more that went 'Oomph! Oomph!' And the plane rolled a bit after that. I was in the very, very front seat of the plane and was watching dishes fly through the air. </div> <div> "There was a crash. The cart tipped over and there was a lot of squealing." </div> <div> "It was over and done with in 10 or 15 seconds." </div> <div> Both Air Canada and passengers praised the actions of the crew. </div> <div>"The flight attendants were amazing, because a lot of them were injured themselves so they had cuts and were trying to dab blood out of
their eyes," said Harvey. </div> <div>Rick McNeil, who arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport several hours later on a different flight, said "the pilot probably saved our lives." </div> <div>"The crew acted very responsibly. I have the utmost respect for them," said McNeil. "I'm not an airline pilot, but the aircraft lost control." </div> <div>Tears running down his face and a fistful of red roses clutched in his hand, Geoff Norris of Toronto waited anxiously for his wife Anne to arrive at Pearson on Thursday night. </div> <div>He said his wife told him on the phone earlier from Calgary she was bruised, but not too badly, "but psychologically, very badly," after the harrowing flight. </div> <div>Norris said his wife told him "the plane started to wiggle or waggle left or right, and then it went into a dive, and people were screaming . . . And when they pulled out of this dive and stabilized the plane I gather that the captain or someone on the P.A.
apologized or made some announcement. And they attributed it to a computer failure or malfunction." </div> <div>He said his wife had been in Victoria to look after her elderly mother who needed some care. He said he and his wife would have a celebratory dinner with their daughter Thursday night after his wife's ordeal. </div> <div>Anne Norris, who was wearing her seatbelt and had a window seat, said after she arrived at Pearson that she has a "bump" but is "fine." She said she thinks the whole terrifying ordeal lasted about a minute and a half. </div> <div>"You could see the wings, and they were going like this (motions with her arms). And then you would drop in between each rotation. At one point, people thought it was going to turn right over, but it didn't, fortunately," said Norris. "That was the scariest bit when people thought it was going to turn over. </div> <div> Norris, who said she has been a nurse for "a long time," had nothing but praise for the crew.
</div> <div>"A lot of people were hurt. The crew were fantastic. Some of the crew were injured quite badly. Everybody behaved really well. Little kids were more upset than anybody. And actually the whole experience was horrible," she said. </div> <div> "We thought we were going to go down. I think there's no doubt about that. And we were all thrown about," she said. </div> <div>"But you know, we got here safely in the end. And I have to say Air Canada did a great job in getting us out of there and getting the medics there, getting people off in stretchers and the ambulances - they were wonderful," said Norris. </div> <div>Norris said she saw the flight attendants who were bringing the coffee along the aisle were thrown about as was a man in the washroom. </div> <div>Sixteen-year-old Elise Fullerton of Mississauga, Ont., said she first heard the news when she was in class and got a text message at 10:30 a.m. ET from her boyfriend, 19-year-old Stefan Linge of
Vancouver, who was moving to Ontario to live with her. </div> <div> "I was in class. He texted me that he almost died," said Fullerton. She said she then called him. </div> <div> "He said that his plane had almost crashed and that he was in Calgary . . . He said he was OK," said Fullerton. </div> <div>She said he was "sort of" freaked out but "he's a guy, you know." She said he told her "kinda cool I almost died" - but that his DVD player was OK. </div> <div>Fullerton said Linge told her it was like a movie, with everyone screaming and the plane shook, then began moving like a see-saw before the nose dived. </div> <div> Fullerton and Linge embraced after he arrived at Pearson. He said he just wanted to get home. </div> <div>Rob Reid, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Air Canada, said the company was focusing on caring for the injured passengers and those "for whom this has been a very stressful experience." </div> <div>"Safety is our first
priority at Air Canada and so any incident involving the safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost concern," Reid said in a statement from Montreal. </div> <div>"We are very proud of the Air Canada flight crew of AC190 and our employees on the ground in Calgary for their professional response to this incident. We also commend the various agencies in Calgary who responded to this incident quickly and professionally. Their actions in helping us take care of our passengers is deeply appreciated." </div> <div>Capt. Andy Wilson, president of the Air Canada Pilots Association, described the airline's pilots as some of "the best trained in the world" and said his organization was co-operating with the investigation. </div> <div>"We are constantly subject to training, licensing and testing," he said. "We want the TSB to do their work and we should quell all speculation until we learn the causes of the incident." </div> <div>Dr. Rob Abernethy, associate chief medical
officer for the Calgary Health Region, said none of the injuries was life-threatening. </div> <div>"These are mostly muscular-skeletal injuries that one would normally see if somebody was bounced around, having falls and that type of thing." </div> <div>FlightAware, a U.S.-based company that tracks commercial air traffic, reported the plane appeared to hit rough air at 7:50 a.m. and changed altitude numerous times, perhaps to find a smoother route before descending into Calgary. </div> <div>"The flight was in a climb and cruised briefly at 35,000 feet and then at 36,000 feet and then descended down to 31,000 feet," said Daniel Baker, CEO of FlightAware. </div> <div>"It attempted to cruise at a variety of different altitudes. My speculation on that is that they were just trying to find smoother air." </div> <div>He said the company's radar track of the flight showed it flew northeast after taking off from Victoria before turning south and cruising east just below the
Canada-U.S. border. The aircraft then turned north into Canadian airspace over the Kootenay Mountains as it headed toward Calgary. </div> <div>NavCanada declined to comment on weather conditions along the route, although the agency's website indicated there were no aviation weather bulletins in effect at the time. </div> <div>Environment Canada reported a low-pressure system with a front moving east across British Columbia on Thursday morning - conditions that one meteorologist called a typical storm. </div> <div> The rough flight was the second in Canada in recent months. </div> <div>In September, nine people were hurt and three sent to hospital after a Halifax-bound WestJet flight hit turbulence with little warning. Passengers in that incident described people who were standing up or not buckled in being tossed about and lifted out of their seats. While they said it felt like the plane fell several hundred metres, the airline said data indicated the altitude drop

I see some people are under the impression that this was mountain effect waveforms. The sudden lurching around discounts that theory. Mountain waves are actually quite a hoot if you're flying visually. They kinds suck when on instruments. More likely it is something wrong with the plane; Airbus has had quite a few problems lately.
