I've installed Real Producer on my SuSE 8.1 box - As it stands, it only
converts avi files to audio only real player files... Does anybody know what
librarise I could install to allow a greater number of conversions to
perhaps include video+audio for mpeg, mov (quicktime) and avi?
I've examined google but can only find folk offering it as a service - I
don't want this - I want to extend my skillset and teach myself how to do it
on my own server...

Replies please... via the newsgroup, so everyone can learn...
Thanks,

I would suggest you take a look at transcode
www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/ ~ostreich/transcode
It gives you the possibility to convert between a large range vide/audio
formats and allows you to resize too.

Yep, ages ago, only to find out that you can only watch the
streams with a paid viewer. NOT with the free one. This might
have changed, check the docs that come with it.

I've never read any restrictions like that. I used the windoze version of
Helix a year or so ago and was able to convert mpeg and avi movies to real
player streaming media type that could be viewed with the free real player -
so either you're talking another age, or the linux implementation differs,
or you might have configured it wrong...
Thanks - I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled though incase such a limitation
exists,
Randell D.

Thanks... but I want to convert movies from mpeg/mov/avi in to a streaming
format that is popular, like Real Player... Correct me if I'm wrong, but
I've taken alook at the 'about' page of the transcode and this does not seem
to be the case - It seems to deal with non-streaming (or at least
non-popular streaming) format of video... I want to extend my skillset and I
know that I'd have a hell of a battle on my hands trying to push a format
that either doesn't stream, or doesn't have a popular, freely available
viewer.
I'll certainly bookmark the page and keep an eye on it in future...
Cheers (and Happy New Year)
Randell D.
Yes, it's called forget that Real rubbish, and use something good like
mencoder or transcode. They're both command-line utilities, but work
very well. I think mencoder can create pretty much anything you want...
transcode makes .avis only I think, but I could be wrong. Google will
help.

Despite your crappy newsreader, which doesn't seem to be able to
quote at all, get a working one, it doesn't make much sense to
reply below "-- ", my newsreader is configured to snip off
.signatures auto-magically and I won't reconfigure it.
You can be sure I hadn't configured it wrong, I do a living from
managing multi user systems.

The default export modules are
ac3 dvraw mp2enc raw
af6 fame mpeg toolame
debugppm ffmpeg mpeg2enc wav
divx4 im net xvid
divx4raw jpg null xvid2
divx5 lame ogg xvid3
divx5raw lzo pcm xvid4
dv mjpeg ppm yuv4mpeg
Which makes transcode to be able to convert between different
divx/mpeg/avi/mjpeg/xvid formats when it comes to video, but of course you can
install otehr export modules and get more formats too.

Thanks for participating in the thread but your reply was TOT (totally off
topic). The least you could do is offer assistance as you talk with such
authority.
Sadly though... You sound more like a windoze CE as opposed to a Red Hat
CE - You lack understanding and patience... I'm wondering if its normal for
you to be awake this time of the year as you sound like a bear with a soar
head. I welcome constructive criticism, and read these groups to learn and
share... If you're going to share the wealth of your knowledge, then for
gods sakes sound educated and show some manners and avoid being
pretentious - If you speak with respect, you'll get respect... Your comments
above are more suited to a farmers shovel during spring time.

Ah! I'm glad you've made that clear - On that basis, I guess you would agree
then that Hitler and Pol Pot were great leaders - They made their living
from leading people and solving problems in their own unique way and never
thought they could be wrong either.
Cheers for that - but... I want to learn specifically about streaming
audio/video over the internet using a popular readily available client
viewer. I had, and lost a project that required these skills over a year
ago and I've got some time on my hands now to extend my skillset. I can
create all the video's I like using the command shell of Real Producer
(Helix) from the windoze command line - But my preference is to stick with
Linux....
any other ideas?

No, it wasn't and I offered assistance, looks like quoting works
now with your M$ OE toy.

http://mpeg4ip.sourceforge.net

If not in your taste, go to freshmeat.net and search among the projects and
see if you find something else.
In the worst case, you could "invest" in win4lin or vmware to run the MS
windows version of helix.
