Here at Bates we have similar cabinets that can be moved drawer by drawer
- wear old clothes as some of the grease will surely be on you! - if you
pull the drawer completely out there should be a metal flap like thing
that is keeping the drawer from falling out, push each side of the flap
down with one person on each side of drawer and pull drawer out keeping
those pushed down. It will be heavy - but can be walked to you new
location without emptying the fiche. Hope this helps - contact me
off-list if these directions aren't clear!

On the occasions when we have had to move fiche cabinets, (and we have
the very cabinets you are talking about) we have
removed the drawers and either put them to the side or stacked them--no
more than 2 high--on trucks and then moved the cabinet. This is not
without risk--you MUST have 2 or more stout souls to handle the drawers,
and those people must be careful not to allow the drawers to buckle. The
drawers must be returned with some care; we managed to break a "stop" on
one without realizing it and on a later occasion, that drawer flew out
when someone opened it. Fortunately the someone leaped out of the way.
Bottom line: there is no good way.

Best wishes!

I know from experience that two people of normal strength can carry a full
drawer from a Russ Bassett 10-drawer fiche cabinet. If you are staying in
the same building, simply marking and removing the drawers, then putting
them back in the same cabinets after they have been moved will work fine.
Several can be stacked on a flatbed cart. Remove the drawers
top-to-bottom; replace them bottom-to-top. You definitely don't want one
of those cabinets tipping over on you.

Several years ago we moved into temporary quarters, then back to a renovated
building. Both moves involved moving microfiche. The first move was a
nightmare. I will not elaborate. The second move was how it should have
been done. I taped cardboard over the fiche in each drawer to prevent any
coming out. I also taped each drawer shut. But the most important thing
we did was hire a moving company that used a "spider". Each fiche cabinet
was lifted by this machine and set on a flat then loaded onto the moving
truck. It was like one would pick up an object weighing onces and putting
it back down in a different location. Good
luck!
