Ten minutes into the film it became clear that the story
was about a psycho serial killer. And the very second that
became known, I instinctively made a prediction: the psycho
will be homosexual and will also be effeminate.
Right on both counts. If Hollywood is indeed teeming with
gay people, then they must be evil, shitty gay people.
For more examples of this type of homophobia, watch
"Mad Max," "Braveheart," "The Silence of the Lambs,"
"Hot Shots Part Deux," and "Dune" (some of these are
very enjoyable). "Seven" is neither the first nor the
last film to homosexualize a villain, especially if he
(or she) is a psycho.

Ok, but I mean, doesn't that face, that smile, and that butt redeem
almost any sin, homophobia included?

I agree with you Tony.. but I wonder if we can make a list of films
which portray GLBT people in a positive way too. Torch Song Trilogy,
Long Time Companions, Making Love (was that the name of it???), Parting
Glances... to name a few.
I haven't seen several of the films you mention.. but I personally
really enjoyed Mad Max and Dune. Dune, while not as good as the book
(films rarely are) is one of my favorite movies.
I think one of the "messages" I draw from Hollywood's prtrayel of GLBT
people.. is that Straights are somewhat terrified of the "power" evoked
by sexual expression between people of the same sex.. what happens when
passion is allowed to be a primal energy source.
A few other films you left of the villian lisrt might include
"Cruising" and "The Crying Game"
Thanks for telling us about "seven". Doesn't sound like the kind of
movie I'd be interested in.

I always assume someone is gay unless they tell me otherwise.
"When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb,
good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of
hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love."

Where in this movie was the killer identified as being GAY? And
effeminate??? HE WAS NOT!
I think you might have gone to this movie with a preconceived notion of
what it was going to say. Besides that you're angry, lighten up. It
bested "The Silence of the Lambs" because it did not go down that road.
It's an amazing movie for what it has to say about our society as well.
And how can you resist Brad Pitt?
I may not have your brilliant mind, but I fail to understand it.

Tony, I hope you post more about why you think the character was both
gay and effeminate. I think this brings up an interesting, though
potentially disasterous topic. What is effeminacy???? Is it a "thing"
or a state of being or is it a relative quality. A person who seems
effeminate to me may not seem effeminate to someone else.
Then another question seems inevitable.. Is effeminacy bad??? Why or
why not?? From reading your posts over time, I get the impression that
Tony, you would consider effeminacy bad. The good or bad distinction
isn't a solvable issue. We will all have our own opinions and I doubt
there would be any consensus. But hearing each other's reasons for
seeing it as one thing or another would be interesting. I know, I
know, we regularly fail to hear each other here on gaynet, but I'm an
optimist.
Then the last thing that comes to mind for me, is Stewat's comment
about the character being cute to him. Is there any correlation
between who we see as "cute" and that person's level of effeminacy????
Or is the attraction to a person about something entirely different??
Tony, I remember you reading quite a bit of queer related literature.
Consider taking a look at "Blossom of Bone" by Randy Conners. It deals
with homoeroticism in the sacred. I found it an interesting look at the
role transgenedered and third gendered people had in various religious
traditions.

Straight society has been doing this in reverse forever, and I'm tired
of it."

First of all, the movie is horrible. That said, when was it stated
the killer was gay? I could have missed it, but nothing comes to mind
(and I saw it just last night) where the psycho's sexual preference is
mentioned.
