LAMBDA Services - Overview

LAMBDA Services is a locally-based, full-time, non-profit organization
run entirely by volunteers. Its mission is to educate and enlighten
the general public; including persons who are gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and transgender (GLBT); about homosexuality and bisexuality. LAMBDA
relies solely on contributions of time, money, and materials to
conduct its multi-faceted operations. Donations are encouraged and
gladly accepted, and new volunteers are always welcome.

LAMBDA Services is currently holding one-day workshops entitled Gay
101: An Introduction to Gay Life. The workshops will cover topics
such as sexuality, gay history, myths & stereotypes, and
discrimination surrounding homosexuality and bisexuality. A $25
suggested donation is being asked to cover course materials. For
information on dates and times, call 915-562-GAYS (915.562.4297).

LAMBDA Line: Established in November of 1991, LAMBDA's 24-hour
computerized switchboard, available from any Touch-Tone phone,
provides news, information, and reference materials on a variety of
topics relating to homosexuality and bisexuality. In 1993, LAMBDA
Line logged in over 26,000 calls.

HelpLine: Volunteers anonymously and discreetly share information,
referrals, understanding, and peer support with callers thru this
talkline. HelpLine is primarily directed towards lesbians, bisexuals,
& gay men, especially those feeling isolated, alone, or confused.
Information and referral services are provided.

Youth OUTreach: Designed to meet the special needs of sexual-minority
youth, LAMBDA's Youth OUTreach provides information, discussion
groups, and educational activities (e.g., special lectures, workshops)
for all youth 15-21 years old; especially those self-identified as
gay, lesbian, and bisexual; and those questioning their sexuality.

TEEN HelpLine is a hotline aimed at reducing the high rates of suicide
and isolation among GLBT adolescents. It is run by and for persons
15-21 years of age.

Anti-Violence Project (AVP): By confronting homophobia, ignorance,
and fear of homosexuality with facts, this project seeks to eliminate
anti-gay brutality. LAMBDA's AVP works to count and counter hate
crimes based on anti-gay prejudice and bias, with education, outreach
and support.

Talk/ Support Groups: LAMBDA's discussion and support groups provide
an informative and safe avenue for the exchange of ideas, facts, and
opinions regarding homosexuality and bisexuality, and to reduce
isolation and alienation.

A Lesbian Support Group, similar to the General GLBT Discussion
Groups, to address the special aspects of lesbianism.

Speakers' Bureau / Public Information: Volunteers from various LAMBDA
projects provide lectures and participate in discussions and open
forums throughout the El Paso, TX/Cd. Juarez, Mexico/Las Cruces, NM
area. A public information division works extensively with news
media, local schools, colleges, universities, and groups providing
interviews and resources for stories and features about queer

Office Staff: Volunteers are trained in and carry out the daily
office operations, such as answering phones, typing, filing, mailing,
recordkeeping, and computer data-entry.
