My company is looking for two emergency notification devices that could be
activated by workers, who working alone, have a problem requiring
assistance. In the first type, we are looking for a device that could be
activated by the worker ---similar to the device advertized on TV, where
an elderly person activates a device they carry, which transmits a signal
to some base station mounted in the home, which in turn dials up a
monitoring service. If possible, we wondered if this device might be sold
separate from the monitoring service, such that we could dial in-plant
numbers. Radio Shack sells a device like this, but we were not impressed
by its reliability or ease of operation.

In the second type, we are looking for a device that automatically
transmits an alert when the worker is knocked flat --- the 'man-down'
device that apparently some fire (Boston's?) departments have. This would
probably work on some mercury switch that would be worn on the belt loop
or leg. Similar transmission to a base station that would dial in plant
telephone
numbers.

Anyone out there know some manufacturers or distributors who carry this
type of equipment? Names and telephone #'s please. Thanks for the help.

A man-down alarm is a option on serveral Motorola radios. The alarm is
activated when the radio falls from the normal carry position ( usually in a
hoster attached to the users belt.) The man-down option is currnty available
on the Motorola MT1000 and the also on several out of production radios
(MX300, HT600, ect.) This option should be used with a radio ID code so that
each radio can be identified by the dispatcher.

Several GE radios use a emergency signal switch that can be activicated by
the user. When this switch is pressed, a signal is transmitted to the
dispatcher that indicated what unit is in trouble.

I believe that GE makes a radio with this feature. We have two potables at
work along with the base station. The base station is in our office
(security) and the two portables are to be used by people in an adjacent
building when they feel the need. The nice thing with the radio is they can
communicate with you and a diligent staff can check with them every so often.
This adds back-up to the man down feature (not that we don't trust
electonics:-o ). If you'd like I'll try to get info on these radios for you.
I do know that they are rather expensive both for the protables and the base
which includes a radio as well as a control unit for the alarms. These will
be displayed in an LED format with the unit number and letter ID> Ex A-1,
etc. Presumably it could be used for a large industrial plant with a listing
of who has what unit and where theyare working. Hope it helps. If you want
