Safe Summer Nights
Smoke Detectors: It's a Lifesaver and It's the Law

Since April 1, 1998 when City Council adopted Ordinance 292, all residential
buildings in the City of Cincinnati must have working smoke detectors. All
residential buildings, including owner occupied, must have working smoke
detectors installed outside sleeping areas. They must be installed on every
level, including basements, cellars, and finished attics.

The USFA National Fire Data Center (NFDC) anticipates that based on recent
trends approximately 3,400 Americans will die of fire related causes in
2000.

With this in mind, the Cincinnati Fire Division will once again be
distributing smoke detectors to the public. The program will be targeting
single-family residences, the elderly, young children, and deaf persons.

Fire companies will be out in the neighborhoods on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday evenings 7:00 - 9:00 PM, each week from May 16 through September
28.

Our hope is to educate the public on the need for having a smoke detector,
what to do if your smoke detector does alert you of a fire, and supply those
homes that are in need with working life saving smoke detectors.

A media release will be sent each week on Monday detailing the neighborhoods
in which fire companies will be distributing smoke detectors.
