Chiefs: White
Captains and Lieutenants: Red
Firefighter, FireMedic, Fire Apparatus Operator: Black
Yellow used to indicate Rescue units before they were taken out of service,
Now they indicate Metro. Fire Assoc. (Buff Club)
Orange used to be the PIO. New PIO is not from the fire service, so she will
probably not wear a helmet.

they are in 3 different colors as follows:

Red - Auxiliary F/Fs and/or Bell & Siren Club members
We use the following colors on helmet frontpieces to designate the type
of company an individual is assigned to.
Engine
F/F - Black w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/black numbers
Truck
F/F - Red w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/red numbers
Rescue
F/F - Blue w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/blue numbers
Salvage (no longer in service - Now I'm showing my age :) )
F/F - Green w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/green numbers
Probie or rookie (aka Red Asses) F/Fs wear orange frontpieces until
their probie period is completed.
Stay safe, all,

<< Are there any "rules" within the big picture of the fire service that
dictate helmet colors and markings in the fire department ladder.
>>
Here goes:
In the CITY of Los Angeles the helmet colors are as follows:
WHITE - Chief Officers (and appointed Commissioners)
ORANGE - Captains (I & II)

It all depends on the policy of your jurisdiction as to what the color
stands for
Chief officers White
Company Officers Red
Firefighters/Engineers Yellow
In my previous department it was
All officers White
All Engineers/Firefighters Yellow
Hope this helps
Rob
Captains Red
Lieutenants Yellow
Firefighters Black
Saftey officer Blue
The Ambulance squad has Orange
Chief White
Lieutenant Yellow
Captain Red
All other FFs Black
My husband's department where he is a chief just does white for chiefs,
and black for all else, I think. I know that being a Fire Investigator,
he also has a Yellow Helmet (I think) And he'll correct me if I'm wrong
about it, I know.

Helmet colors seem to be a matter of 'tradition' and regional
preference. While I've never research NFPA or IFSTA on the subject, I'm
sure they have comments or recommendations (they do on everything else,
why not helmets ;-).
Anyhow, I usually avoid these threads because they never seem to die;
however, I'll add what is the 'general' preference here in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul West Metro area:
Firefighters: Yellow
Company Officers: Red
Chief Officers: White
There is also a 'trend' back towards the 'traditional' leather (or
leather look-a-like) helmet. In this case substitute black for
Firefighers. As an aside, helmet color seems to be less critical (IMHO)
when ICS is installed and operating. In this case who has the radio is
the 'responsible party'.
One final comment. Some departments in our area use helmets to
identify probationary firefighters. This tends to be done with blue
helmets (solely because blue is a readily available color) and as they
gain experience yellow with a blue stripe. Due to the color, these
firefighers are affectionately referred to as 'smurfs' and 'baby
smurfs'.
