I would like to start a conversation on "The Color of Your Helmet"
What level of authority does the color of your helmet represent. From
probi to chief, safety officers to photographer? What about special
marking on your helmet, ID rockers.
Are there any "rules" within the big picture of the fire service that
dictate helmet colors and markings in the fire department ladder.

Black = Probationary FF's

Yellow = All other FF's

White = Chief and Assistant Chief

Shields have titles on them such as Training Officer (That would be me), Lt,
Captain, etc.

In Atlanta:

Chiefs: White
Captains and Lieutenants: Red
Firefighter, FireMedic, Fire Apparatus Operator: Black

Yellow used to indicate Rescue units before they were taken out of service,
Now they indicate Metro. Fire Assoc. (Buff Club)

Orange used to be the PIO. New PIO is not from the fire service, so she will
probably not wear a helmet.

This is how our helmets color work, Black is the grunt, stickers indicate
whether the memeber is cadet or 2nd, 1st lt. or capt. safety officer for our
extracation wears orange/yellow color, engineer is red, the asst chief, and
chief wear white helmets with markings. We just started to switch to a more
traditional style helmet(BULLARD) and this will be interesting as for the
stickers kinda are hard to read on them. I wear a leather Sam Houston,
officers wear white frontals w/ red print, white letters, as well as the
chiefs.

In Newark, N.J., we use the traditional New Yorker-style helmets and
they are in 3 different colors as follows:

Black - F/Fs and company officers
White - Chief officers
Red - Auxiliary F/Fs and/or Bell & Siren Club members

We use the following colors on helmet frontpieces to designate the type
of company an individual is assigned to.

Engine
F/F - Black w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/black numbers
Truck
F/F - Red w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/red numbers
Rescue
F/F - Blue w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/blue numbers
Salvage (no longer in service - Now I'm showing my age :) )
F/F - Green w/white numbers
Capt. - White w/green numbers

Probie or rookie (aka Red Asses) F/Fs wear orange frontpieces until
their probie period is completed.

Stay safe, all,
Chief Hank

Here goes:

In the CITY of Los Angeles the helmet colors are as follows:

WHITE - Chief Officers (and appointed Commissioners)

ORANGE - Captains (I & II)

BLUE - EMS personnel

RED - Inspectors and Cause Investigators

YELLOW - Everyone else (Firefighters, Apparatus Operators and Engineers)

The same color scheme is used by LA COUNTY Fire.

My previous Department had the following color system:

Chief White
Lieutenant Yellow
Captain Red
All other FFs Black

My husband's department where he is a chief just does white for chiefs,
and black for all else, I think. I know that being a Fire Investigator,
he also has a Yellow Helmet (I think) And he'll correct me if I'm wrong
about it, I know.

If I remember right, my husband was telling me about the NYC Fire
Department. Not only are they color coded as to helmets, but also the
shields on the helmets, too. A certain colored helmet with a certain
color shield on it differentiates between the different
officers/rankings within the NYFD. He'd be able to tell you better
which color helmet and shield means what.

My helmet is a 5A style Cairns, Black w/ Boston-style reflective
markings on the side (moment of humble silence here.....). The
frontspiece is white with my company emblem on it. The traditional style
suits me better for photography. I've found the "newer" style helmets get
in the way of the flash and sometimes the shooting. I've used a "hard
hat" for investigations, but if there's a lot of water being tossed
around, the Cairns offers the most protections for me. My photo equipment
is NIkon and that's stood up to the abuse the fire gives them for decades
now. I attempt to protect myself and my equipment alla' time.

Helmet colors seem to be a matter of 'tradition' and regional
preference. While I've never research NFPA or IFSTA on the subject, I'm
sure they have comments or recommendations (they do on everything else,
why not helmets ;-).

Anyhow, I usually avoid these threads because they never seem to die;
however, I'll add what is the 'general' preference here in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul West Metro area:

Firefighters: Yellow
Company Officers: Red
Chief Officers: White

There is also a 'trend' back towards the 'traditional' leather (or
leather look-a-like) helmet. In this case substitute black for
Firefighers. As an aside, helmet color seems to be less critical (IMHO)
when ICS is installed and operating. In this case who has the radio is
the 'responsible party'.

One final comment. Some departments in our area use helmets to
identify probationary firefighters. This tends to be done with blue
helmets (solely because blue is a readily available color) and as they
gain experience yellow with a blue stripe. Due to the color, these
firefighers are affectionately referred to as 'smurfs' and 'baby
smurfs'.
