Dear Colleague,

The Autumn Meeting of the FIRE CHEMISTRY DISCUSSION GROUP will be held at
the University of Salford on Wednesday 18 December 1996. The theme of the
meeting will be ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF FIRES AND FLAME RETARDANTS with
the keynote talks 'Environmental aspects of fires involving plastics and
rubbers' being given by Dr Tom O'Neil (Du Pont, U.K.) and `Life-cycle of
textile flame retardant materials' by Prof. A.R. Horrocks. I very much hope
that you will be able to attend what promises to be a very timely and
interesting meeting. Offers to present short contributions are very welcome. A
registration form is attached.

The AGM of the FIRE CHEMISTRY DISCUSSION GROUP will be held during this
autumn meeting. An important item of business will be to elect the
officers/committee for the coming year. If you are interested in
volunteering/nominating someone as an officer/committee member, please let
me know before the meeting.

Best wishes.

On the plastics meeting I have some suggestions as to some newer ideas
to be thrown out for discussion use of use of foam 6 % concentrate
solution to be injected to put out fires with plastics, and not duluted
by the use of water or a less stronger foam solution of 3 %. You build
a protective factor into the mess when you use the foam poured over a
spill or used as a firefighting device. Do not use any water on
Plastics or containers that have TDI or MDI Isocynates. Also did a
study of picking up spills of TDI / MDI Isocynates. If Spilled Use
straight liqiud 6% foam concentrate without water. Pour the foam
concentrate over the spill while using a vacumn system do not use water
but just pour the foam on the spilled area. Stops the fumes and if you
slip into the spill or get the material on you, the 6 % foam will
cause the material to wash off the skin by rubbing it off and wont go
under the protective foam barrier.

The sill can be cleaned up by a vacumn truck, and the foam concentrate
keeps the materials stable from foaming and or releasing the posionous
fumes.
