Educators Gather to Define Needs for America's Schools

Thirty-five teams led by public college and university presidents
will participate in a national conference in June that could define
America's public schools and redefine teacher education programs.
Teams participating in the "Conference on Teach America: Teacher
Preparation for the New American School" include the university
president, the chief academic officer, the deans of the schools of
education and arts and sciences, a K-12 public school representative
and a corporate or business representative. Key education officials in
each state will also be invited to this three-day Washington meeting,
June 14-16, sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and
Universities (AASCU) with Digital Equipment Corporation as the
corporate sponsor.
Participants will define the schools of the future, specify the
role of the teacher and develop strategies for teacher preparation and
retraining programs.
Information from this conference will be used by AASCU's
Presidents' Commission on Teacher Education to propose a national
policy on teacher preparation and retraining. The 16-member commission
developed the Teach America agenda for presidents to improve the
teacher education programs on their campuses. These programs prepare
teachers to teach in the public schools of the future and to meet the
six National Education Goals recommended by the National Governors
Association.
The "Teach America" agenda, presented at AASCU's Annual Meeting in
November 1991, called for presidents to take the lead in ensuring that
teacher preparation programs define and educate the kind of teacher
needed for the 21st century. Presidents participating in the June
conference have agreed to implement the strategies developed at the
conference.
"The new American schools likely to emerge will require changes,
calling for teaching styles not generally practiced and learning styles
not yet recognized in either the K-12 schools or some schools of
education," AASCU President James B. Appleberry said. "Those of us in
teacher education must ensure that our graduates will return to the
schools -- whether as teachers or administrators -- able and willing to
build an educational environment in which learning flourishes."
Jack McCredie, Manager of Digital's Education and Science Business
Unit, said "Corporations must work collaboratively with education to
meet the demand for a more highly educated work force in the next
century. By supporting AASCU's teacher education efforts, Digital
believes it is making an investment in the future of our country."
Another conference in June 1993 will develop implementation
strategies and public policy prerequisites.
AASCU is a Washington-based higher education association
representing 375 public colleges and universities and 30 state systems
nationwide.
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is
the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems and
services. AASCU's members use a Digital-based electronic network for
communication, developed with grant support from Digital.
Invited speakers for this year's conference include President
