Is there a way to have two printers connected to the
same computer all the time, so that it would be simple
to switch from one to the other? I use both an
HPDeskjet and an HPLaserjet 1000 with one of the
library PCs and I would like to make it as simple as
possible for other users to choose a printer. One of
the things I worry about is the printer port and how
it holds up to frequent plugging and unplugging of
cables.
Thanks for whatever.

Kathy,
Are your computers networked? I'm assuming not because of your question
about plugging and unplugging cables. If networking is not in the near
future, there are switches that will allow 2 computers to access one
printer. Each computer has its own printer cable which is plugged into
this switch (small box). The printer is also connected to the box. That
means you need a total of 3 printer cables.
If your 2 computers have network cards they could be set up as their own
little network with the use of a network cable. One of the computers
would physically have the printer attached to its printer port (local
printer). The other computer would be set up with a network printer.

Hi there,
Why not just add a second parallel port and your problem will be
solved.

Go to your local Staples, Office Depot, or Best Buy and purchase a parallel
port. Installation instructions will come with the product. No Problem.

If your computer has USB ports (assuming it's fairly recent, it should!)
you can get a USB -> Parallel cable which works REALLY well. I am using it
to hook up a second printer and it works without a hitch. Just choose the
printer you want from the printer dropdown box in your program and that's it.

If your computers are networked all you have to do is install each printer
on each computer. You then set a default printer but you can also chose
which printer you want to use each time you print.

There are inexpensive mechanical switches one can purchase for this=20
purpose. One simply reaches over and flips the switch. They work just=20
fine. You don't have to plug and unplug the cables.

I have been very happy with the Belkin Bitronics Dataswitch. It has a
couple of buttons on it, you push the button and you will print from
whatever printer you select. You also need to select the appropriate printer
in the software. It has worked fine with my HP Laserjet 1100 and HP
DeskJet 895Cxi. I have tried similar switches which have not worked well.
You also need to be careful that the switch you choose is HP compatible (not
all are).
Good luck,
