lab supervision of students

I'm new to this school and there is an expectation that there will be an
adult presence in the lab at all times when there are students there. We're
a one lab school and this poses a problem if teachers want some students to
work in the lab for a few minutes during a lesson while I'm not available to
supervise. I've been thinking further about the fact that many schools are
moving to laptop carts and even laptop programs; in those cases, students
may be on the computer during school without having an adult physically
present. I'm trying to work through this issue to make a recommendation to
the technology committee.

What does your school do? Do you have any advice/observations to help me
work through this issue?

Damianne,

Getting some computers donated to the classrooms might be helpful. I had
the same problem last year, and we started to partner up with a company that
would donate there computers to our school. Those computers would then be
put into the classroom so that students would not have to actually leave the
class to work on one.

IDLA serves districts in the state of Idaho offering classes which are often
taught in a lab setting. In our case, many of these students are in
different classes virtually, but the same location physically. Lab persons
can have difficulty at a glance discerning our site from 'other' sites. Our
IT Director typically recommends iTalc http://italc.sourceforge.net/ for
monitoring students (using a dedicated machine other than this person's
regular desktop computer) for this purpose. The dedicated machine can view
several screens at once and this tends to promote responsibility.

There isn't any easy answer, but this may provide a tool working as part of
a package of safety measures.
