There is Prey Project - it's free, but is not as complete as some that you
are looking at.
When the laptop goes online it looks for a web page - which you will need to
set up on your own web server if you are going to track more than three
laptops.
If the laptop is stolen, you delete that page. It will then send an email
with IP address, traceroute, etc. and if a webcam is installed on the laptop
like many are now, it will also send a picture of whoever is sitting in
front of it. That worked when I tested it.
It does not do anything else, like lock down the laptop. The other downfall
is that it is not a hidden process - a thief with some computer savvy can
shut it down if they know where to look.
