Subject: Image Databases (results)
Several weeks ago I posted a message to the list asking for information on
image databases. I was asked to post the results which are a combination
of answers to that post, a veronica search, an archie search, and serendipity.
I imagine it only scratches the surface of image databases available. It is
meant to be a representative sample. If you know of other noteworthy sites
please let me know. Thanks for your contributions.

A server dedicated to the dissemination of
architectural knowledge. This is a gopher server in
its developmental stages. However, many exciting
ideas and projects are underway which will
transform ArchiGopher into a true multimedia
resource for all architecture faculty and students
worldwide. To date, the following directories are
available:
1) The Kandinsky archive: A sample of five Wassily
Kandinsky paintings.
2) The Palladio archive: A sample of Andrea
Palladio's architectural projects.
3) A sample of the CAD group's collection of
computer images.
4) Musings on and collages of lunar architecture by
Ted Hall.
5) Scenes from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
6) Images of Hellenic and Byzantine architecture
and monuments
7) Links to other gophers including the Vatican
library exhibit and the Johns Hopkins archives.
There are also other projects being considered that
will offer unique resources for architectural
researchers not readily available anywhere else.

ROME REBORN: THE VATICAN LIBRARY &
RENAISSANCE CULTURE
An Exhibit at the Library of Congress. Available by
anonymous FTP from seq1.loc.gov (140.147.3.12)
/pub/vatican.exhibit.
ROME REBORN: THE VATICAN LIBRARY AND
RENAISSANCE CULTURE presents some 200 of the
Vatican Library's most precious manuscripts,
books, and maps--many of which played a key role
in the humanist recovery of the classical heritage
of Greece and Rome. The exhibition presents the
untold story of the Vatican Library as the
intellectual driving force behind the emergence of
Rome as a political and scholarly superpower
during the Renaissance. The exhibit will be on
display in the Jefferson Building of the Library of
Congress from January 8, 1993 through April 30,
1993. The online exhibit will be available by
anonymous FTP indefinitely.
The exhibit is divided into nine (9) sections: The
Vatican Library (55 images), Archaeology (23
images), Humanism (27 images), Mathematics (19
images), Music (29 images), Medicine & Biology (11
images), Nature Described (8 images), A Wider
World I: How the Orient Came to Rome, and A Wider
World II: How Rome Went to China (21 images
altogether). Each section consists of its own sub-
directory within the /exhibit directory and
contains the exhibit text for that section and
separate image files for each object. This online
exhibit includes not only objects from the Library
of Congress exhibit, but also the alternate objects
(brought from Rome to be used if there were a
problem with one of the primary objects) and items
omitted later in the planning process.

Seven images. The purpose of this gopher is to
provide access to information (both data derived
from VCR/LTER research and about future
activities) to ecological researchers. Research
activities of the VCR/LTER focus on the mosaic of
transitions and steady-state systems that
comprise the barrier-island/lagoon/mainland
landscape of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Primary
study sites are located on Hog Island, Parramore
Island and mainland marshes near Nassawadox VA.
The VCR/LTER maintains a laboratory facility in
Oyster, VA.

I make a living as a physicist/programmer while
sneaking time to do my art. This show is an
attempt to bring those two very different halves of
my life together a bit. In the future I would like to
explore "art under the influence of computer
networking" in a way that takes into account the
fact that it is very different to download a scanned
image of a painting than to see the same painting in
a gallery, or to actually hold it in your hands. For
the moment this show is more a vehicle to get my
art seen than an actual essential element of the
artwork itself.

Folks, we're now announcing for public access a set
of files available for anonymous ftp, containing
scientific quality weather satellite images. We
have a regular collection of Japanese GMS images,
both in IR and visible light. These images are
received at a ground station at Hickam AFB, HI, and
processed at the University of Hawaii, then moved
to an archive site at NASA Ames Research Center,
Moffett Field CA. From there, they are copied to
shadow archives sites. Each archive site contains
the last 4 days worth of images transmitted by the
GMS satellite on a revolving basis.
