We are currently an all Mac school. I am the technology specialist for
grades 1-4. We have purchased a Canon Optura PI Digital Video camera and
have been using iMovie. I love it and it is so easy to use. We are building
a brand new elementary school that will house 1-5 grades. There are some
people in the district that want us to move to PC's. Can any one give me a
suggestion of what is needed on the PC side to do the same thing as iMovie?
Thanks

Any PC with the right video/graphics card and software can also do video
editing using software like Adobe Premier and Windows ME comes with its own
built-in video editing capabilities. Also many new PCs have the
Firewire/iLink/IE1394 high speed digital connectors that the iMac DVs have.
I would highly recommend that even a PC school consider iMac DVs for video
editing, especially since Macs nowadays are highly interoperable with PCs.
But if you must buy PCs I would look at the Sony VAIO system that are
designed to do similar things as the iMacs DVs, though not as easy or as well.
(FYI: at my high school we use mostly PCs but get all Macs for multimedia,
publishing, web design and graphics, which gives us the best of both worlds
and they all work great on our Netware network).

All you need to do digital video on the PC is a fire wire card and a digital
video editing software package. My experience (admittedly limited) has been
that digital video is a bit more hassle-free on iMacs compared to PCs. What
have other people found?

I agree with the idea of using Macs for graphics. In my district, we, just
this year, opened a state-of the-art high school, The school has gone to
PC's except for the graphic design department, which has all Macs; does that
tell you something?

PC configuration is somewhat problematic. I've included a few sample
configurations at www.videointeractive.org
I agree that there are fewer hassles with iMacs and G4s, and iMovie has many
more features than comparable PC apps.
