Forced to park my car further away this morning, I had a walk through
our Earth Sciences and Biology Departments to reach my office.
I couldn't help gnashing my teeth again at how much more attractive
their wall displays are than those in our Mathematics and Statistics
Department. All sorts of rocks, profusely illustrated charts, Landsat
photos, electron microscope images, etc.

We have pictures of eminent mathematicians like Courant, Noether,
Poincare', etc, and, worse still, pictures of former Department heads.
These pictures mean something to those who know a little of the work
ot the worthy people involved, but almost nothing to the large mass
of students who might see them.

I'm sure that it would be possible to come up with interesting displays
like fractals and strange attractors and maybe some applications of
maths and stats like image enhancement. I wonder if the network
would be a good place to swap ideas about effective departmental wall
displays. Especially, if someone has seen a really effective departmental
display they may like to follow up on this.
