The short answer is the EDIFACT DESADV Despatch Advice Message.
This issue of X12 - EDIFACT cross references has already been discussed
on EDI-L. Ajay K. Sanghi asked the very same question last March. I
answered it in Re: Equivalent of TA3, 242 in EDIFACT, etc. on March
23rd. You can find the answer by examining the archives of EDI-L at
http://www.ecweb.com/edil/, specifically that for March 1998.
These archives are graciously provided by Electronic Commerce Systems.
If you don't have Web access, write back in again and I will be happy to
reproduce the full text of the relevant message(s) for you, and to show
alternate means of examining the archives.

I then went to the Texas Instruments site mentioned in the archived message,
but no mention of the 856 message.
<anorak mode on>
I looked up X12 856 in the X12 Standards manuals and noted the definition of
the transaction set to see if I could match it against any of the UN/EDIFACT
messages.
The closest I could find was the IFCSUM (Forwarding and consolidation
summary message)
<anorak mode off>
I am going to do a Bill Kammerer and point Sandi to the UN/EDIFACT website
so that Sandi can decide if the IFCSUM message fits the bill (so to speak):

The relevant passage in the archives from March read:
Anyway, there's no consolidated list that I know about or have
seen in any of the CEFACT or JRT minutes. But if you had been
browsing through any of the links that FORESIGHT has so graciously
supplied of Implementation Guidelines present on the Web, you
would've undoubtedly run into Texas Instruments' EDI Guidelines at
http://www.ti.com/sc/docs/scedi/techpaks/sctecpak.htm. The page is
a table displaying TI's "rich portfolio" of transaction sets,
consisting of both UN/EDIFACT and ANSI ASC X12 documents. This is
the best and most complete attempt I've seen of a ASC X12 to EDIFACT
Message equivalency matrix. Kudos to TI.
And indeed, the URL at TI has the much-renowned matrix showing the
DESADV being (roughly) equivalent to the 856. It also shows the IFCSUM
(International Consolidation & Forwarding Summary Message) as not having
any X12 equivalent.
I'm flattered that the act of referring another to a URL for more detail
is now called a "Bill Kammerer." If I were to say something or proffer
an opinion myself, it may not be believable or I'd actually have to work
at justifying the claim. But if I show where to find the same thing
printed on a Web-page, suddenly it has tremendous credibility!
I don't mind WK. But I never use "Bill."

Actually, such a cross reference is the responsibility of the
X12/EDIFACT Alignment Task Group and/or the Delegate Liaison Task Group
(DLTG). It's right there for the taking at the X12 DLTG Home Page, and
is entitled "X12 DLTG - UN/EDIFACT MESSAGE STATUS IN X12 DEVELOPMENT."
It's recently updated and available at
http://www.disa.org/x12/dltg/DLTG_ds.pdf.
Thanks, Rachel, for reminding us of this nice list.
