The ECOTOURIST'S GUIDE TO THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON provides an
authoritative, comprehensive, up-to-date inventory of ecotourism
resources and related infrastructure and services for the most important
and most accessible ecotourism region of Amazonia. The guide was
compiled by a 14 member University of Ottawa (Canada) research team
directed by Geography Professor Rolf Wesche, who has conducted research
and led study tours in Amazonia since 1965.
From the Eastern slopes of the Andes to the Peruvian Boundary,
the Guide describes 35 scenic hiking trails (including ascents of the
Sumaco and Reventador volcanoes) and river/lagoon routes, 18 caves, 36
petroglyphs, 24 ecolodges, 13 indigenous (i.e. Amazon Indian) operated
tourism enterprises, and guiding companies involving 83 guides (20 of
which are indigenous). Emphasis is placed on *indigenous controlled
ecotourism*, which this guide seeks to support. All public
transportation facilities, hotels and restaurants of the region are
described.
The Guide features 25 maps, 16 of which are fold-out
topographical maps at the 50 000 or 25 000 scale depicting hiking
trails,
scenic river routes and lagoons, other tourist attractions and
infrastructure. It is further illustrated with 28 color photos and 11
major tables and contains an annoted bibliography of 28 items.
