THE BIG GREEN GATHERING
organised by The Big Green Gathering Co. Ltd.
A five day open air gathering of ecologically minded people
demonstrating wind and solar powered ingenuity on a green
field site in the Vale of the White Horse at Watchfield,
Oxfordshire (near Swindon, Wiltshire), England is under way
from 27th - 31st July 1994.
The gathering is host to about 2,000 committed individuals
who have come together to celebrate the common spirit of
green ideology, and to prepare for the major endeavour of
laying the foundations for a greener, fairer, more
sustainable future.
Active participation is the focus: a broad spectrum of
craftspeople, growers, technicians, healers, artists,
musicians, entertainers, communicators and their families
have transformed a disused airfield into a vivid
demonstration of what life could be like if people lived
according to ecological principals. The result is a cross-
cultural carnival atmosphere tempered with a seriously
dedicated sense of purpose, with people living side-by-side
in a diversity of temporary dwellings from tipis, benders
and horse-drawn caravans to live-in buses, trucks, tents and
camper-vans.
The event is a great success, with vast amounts of
information being exchanged in a determined effort to
establish networks and pool skills and resources. But five
days is not enough - we need to hold more of these events if
we are to become a forum for the exchange of green ideas and
make working plans for their practical development.
Unfortunately, however, due to the inevitable concerns and
pressures experienced by both the authorities and the
organisers in launching a first event of this nature, a
strict policy of 'advanced ticket holders only' has been
adopted at the entrance. Consequently the anticipated
income from weekend visitors attracted by encouraging media
coverage could not be realised, leaving a 6,000 shortfall
on our minimum budget of 27,000.
We are e-mailing this message on GreenNet and Internet from
the gathering site on a wind-powered computer, to all people
with a vision for a greener future that feel they would like
to support us in our endeavours towards making this year's
gathering a financial success and sustain the Big Green
Gathering co-operative account for future green developments.
