This dial b book sounds really nice. It is indeed a shame that they
choose to provide the book in adobe only. That leaves blind people, who
would be chief beneficiaries of on-line books (after all, sighted folks
can get them in book stores or libraries) out of the loop. I wonder why,
since the first chapte is available in ascii format, they couldn't
provide ascii for the whole thing if somebody wanted it. Just another
example of something that should be a benefit being inaccessible to us.
Oh well. What's new?

that's nice as far as it goes, but wouldn't it be better for them to go
one step farther and offer complete works and in accessible form?

I agree with Mary that it is unfortunate blind people are not able to
access this dial-a-book at this time, but we must remember there are
other types of disabilities represented on this list as well. What about
those who are mobility impared for example and unable to go to a book store.

Just my 2 cents.

My reasons for posting the information about dial-a-book were two fold: 1) I
wanted people to know about a place where textual information ,no matter how
limited, could be obtained; 2) people need to know about services which are
not completely accessible so they can act to bring about positive change.

We as blind people need to stop whining about the state of the world and act
proactively to make positive changes. Perhaps if ten of us wanted to
purchase books from this establishment, and asked for them in ASCII, it
would have an impact.

I submit that this organization chose PDF because they thought it would
most closely represent the look of the original print copy. Questions of
access to a screen reader never entered into the picture.

Take care!

Amen!

P.S., What was that web site again? I think I lost it. If twenty of us
got off our, err, um, well, and sent the webmaster at 'whatever'. They
might think more than twice. They might think a dozen times.

I hope I'm doing this right. I'm an OT student at Barry U. in Miami.
I'm trying to write a paper about internet access for the blind.
However, I've been trying for several weeks to access anything myself to
write about. This is as far as I've gotten. My original intent was to
demonstrate how a blind user would be able to access software over the
internet through a freenet (I'm on seflin freenet). So far I've been
spinning my wheels (and my brain), when I realized that easi had a
listserve that I could join. Please excuse my long winded request for
help(!). Thanks in advance to anyone who respond.
PEACE AND LOVE, BARBARA

Can an Arkenstone Openbook read a PDF file? Might be a part way solution
for some.
