Anne Schneider spoke with me this morning. She is the mother of a Boston U.
student who has a learning disability, is cited in the NY Times article and
has been a major fundraiser for the LD program at BU. She is working with
several prominent attorneys to address the issues at BU, and is in the
process of setting up a legal defense fund. When it is established, she
will inform us (via DSSHE-L, for example) of the address and specifics for
donations; she inquired whether professionals, students or parents would
contribute to a fund, even donations as small as $25. I told her that I
felt many would do so if they know how to do it. I personally dislike
appeals via internet for donations but the issues in this case are close to
us.
This clearly seems a case that those of us in higher ed disability services
need to watch or support. If you are so inclined, give some thought to how
you, your program, students or parents could assist in the efforts of Ms.
Schneider. She is acutely aware of the impact this case has for campuses
and students across the country; she is even more aware that it requires
good legal representation and a groundswell of support.
If you or others want to communicate your interest or support for the
efforts of her and other parents, and BU students, Ms. Schneider's FAX is
212-734-9771; her mailing address is: 830 Park Ave., New York City, NY
10021. She gave permission to release her fax number and address; she does
not have an email address.
