Colleagues,

Anne Schneider spoke with me this morning. She is the mother of a Boston U.
student who has a learning disability, is cited in the NY Times article and
has been a major fundraiser for the LD program at BU. She is working with
several prominent attorneys to address the issues at BU, and is in the
process of setting up a legal defense fund. When it is established, she
will inform us (via DSSHE-L, for example) of the address and specifics for
donations; she inquired whether professionals, students or parents would
contribute to a fund, even donations as small as $25. I told her that I
felt many would do so if they know how to do it. I personally dislike
appeals via internet for donations but the issues in this case are close to
us.

This clearly seems a case that those of us in higher ed disability services
need to watch or support. If you are so inclined, give some thought to how
you, your program, students or parents could assist in the efforts of Ms.
Schneider. She is acutely aware of the impact this case has for campuses
and students across the country; she is even more aware that it requires
good legal representation and a groundswell of support.

If you or others want to communicate your interest or support for the
efforts of her and other parents, and BU students, Ms. Schneider's FAX is
212-734-9771; her mailing address is: 830 Park Ave., New York City, NY
10021. She gave permission to release her fax number and address; she does
not have an email address.

I'm with you, Ron. I think it's about time the LD issue came to
a head.

Members of the list may be interested to know that the Association on
Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) is drafting a position paper
relating to the issues stemming from Boston University's recent
position. While our response will not target BU, it will represent a
statement of the Association's position with regard to issues raised
during this controversy. This statement will be available to all members
and the media. I will also request that it be posted on our gopher site.

The upcoming ALERT, AHEAD's newsletter, will include an article about the
occurances in Boston, as well as some proactive information for service
providers regarding working with their administrations and the media.

If anyone needs more information about AHEAD, please contact our
headquarters in Columbus, Ohio at 614-488-4972.

Thanks to all those who have commented on these issues within the last
week. Your responses have promoted valuable dialog in our field.

Dear Diane,
I'm really glad to see AHEAD taking a leadership role in this issue. When
will the position paper and ALERT be available? Would you please post the
position paper to this listserve, too?

Many thanks,

Susan Vogel

Susan,

The AHEAD position paper should be available within the next week. We
are working quickly to draft and review for comment before mass
distribution. The ALERT will be mailed to AHEAD members on March 8. I
will make arrangements to have the position statement posted on this list
when it becomes available.

Thanks for your quick reply, Diane. Could you send me a draft of the
position paper as well? I would be happy to give input if you want, too.
Many thanks, Susan Vogel

Thanks, Diane, as an AHEAD member, I appreciate the Association's efforts.
Is Loring still an officer as past president? If so, can he be contacted
via AHEAD, does he have AHEAD e-mail, etc.
Thanks, Richard
