MURDER WITH PEACOCKS, $24.95, won the 1998
St. Martin's Press/Malice Domestic Best First Mystery
contest. It's been on the weekly bestseller lists
from The Mystery Book Store almost every week since
it arrived. It's a humorous cozy I enjoy recommending
to readers, along with CIRCLES OF CONFUSION, $23.00,
by April Henry, another bestselling cozy first novel.
CIRCLES OF CONFUSION is about a woman who inherits
all her great aunt's worldly goods. That means a
trailer full of newspapers, magazines and other
detritus. While her boyfriend Evan hauls carloads
full to the dump and the Goodwill, our protagonist, Meg,
discovers a dusty old suitcase under the aunt's bed.
Inside it she finds some Nazi propaganda from WWII and
a gorgeous, little oil painting. The question is, will
the picture prove a stolen art treasure or a fabulous fake?
Meg has to leave her job at the Motor Vehicle Dept., where
she approves/disapproves applications for vanity plates,
to take it to New York to be appraised. Chapters end
with actual vanity plates which the reader must
decipher. A glossary of definitions is
provided at the book's end.
A wonderful read, CIRCLES OF CONFUSION, includes several
parts I particularly enjoyed. One was Meg's visit to the Big
Apple to find an appraiser where she finds instead two young
men who may have more than art on their minds. I also
enjoyed Meg's trip to Filene's. So
much FUN! Hope you enjoy this one, too!
